    Abstract: 1378138 Cathode materials PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 25155/73 Heading H1D A thermionic cathode comprises a Mo plate 5 welded to a W filament 4 and carrying a compressed mixture 6 of LaB 6 and Rh, W 2 B or W 2 B 5 . The plate is circular or polygonal, plane or concave. It may be formed from Mo powder and compressed with the mixture at 3000 kg./ cm. 2 . The cathode is heated in H 2 at 1750‹ C., degassed at 1600‹ C. and activated at 1500‹ C. One or more zig-zag or spiral W filaments may be used, connected to Fe-Ni-Co alloy leads 2, 3. The cathode is used in electron microscopes.
