Abstract: Methods and systems for hydrodeoxygenating a bio-derived feedstock during the production of renewable diesel and generating renewable power as part of the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process are provided herein. One method includes providing an HDO catalyst within either a shell or tube side of an isothermal HDO reactor including a shell-and-tube configuration and exposing a bio-derived feedstock to the HDO catalyst within the isothermal HDO reactor to form an HDO reactor effluent. The method also includes flowing a water stream through the opposite side of the isothermal HDO reactor as compared to the side including the HDO catalyst to remove the heat of reaction between the bio-derived feedstock and the HDO catalyst, where the removal of the heat of reaction using the water stream forms steam. The method further includes flowing the steam through a steam turbine to provide for the generation of renewable power.

Abstract: Solvent mixtures for downhole elemental sulfur removal and formation stimulation, and methods for utilizing such solvent mixtures, are described herein. One method includes providing a solvent mixture that includes an elemental sulfur solvent fraction and an odorant fraction that includes a lactate ester solvent. The method also includes injecting the solvent mixture into a hydrocarbon well such that the elemental sulfur solvent fraction of the solvent mixture dissolves elemental sulfur deposited on well components, and contacting the solvent mixture with water such that the lactate ester solvent within the odorant fraction reacts with the water to generate lactic acid. The method further includes stimulating a formation through which the hydrocarbon well extends by flowing the solvent mixture including the lactic acid through the hydrocarbon well and into the formation.

Abstract: This disclosure provides methods for separating multi-ring naphthenes from a hydrocarbon feedstock. The hydrocarbon feedstock includes at least normal paraffins, isoparaffins, 1-ring naphthenes attached with a paraffinic alkyl chain, and multi-ring naphthenes. The methods comprise passing the hydrocarbon feedstock and a solvent, at a temperature and pressure through a bed of an adsorbent comprising a metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbent, to adsorb the multi-ring naphthenes from the hydrocarbon feedstock, thereby producing a base stock product that is depleted in multi-ring naphthenes. The metal-organic framework adsorbent is a porous crystalline material comprised of metal functionalities connected by organic linkers to form a repeating 2-D or 3-D lattice. The base stock product has a viscosity index (VI) greater than the viscosity index of the hydrocarbon feedstock. The methods of this disclosure upgrade Group II base stocks (also Group II+ base stocks) to Group III or Group III+ base stocks, and also upgrade Group III base stocks to Group III+ base stocks.

Abstract: A hydrocarbon feed stream, particularly one comprising heavier hydrocarbons, may be converted to valuable products such as motor gasoline and/or lubricating oil by employing one or more MOF catalysts, which may be prepared from a precursor metal-organic framework (MOF). A MOF catalyst may be prepared by exchanging one or more organic linking ligands of the precursor MOF for an organic linking ligand having a different acidity and/or electron-withdrawing properties, which, in turn, may affect catalytic activity.

Abstract: A system and method for producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a natural gas stream. Each of a plurality of LNG trains liquefies a portion of the natural gas stream to generate a warm LNG stream in a first operating mode, and a cold LNG stream in a second operating mode. A sub-cooling unit is configured to, in the first operating mode, sub-cool the warm LNG streams to thereby generate a combined cold LNG stream. The warm LNG streams have a higher temperature than a temperature of the cold LNG streams in the second operating mode and the combined cold LNG stream. The combined cold LNG stream has, in the first operating mode, a higher flow rate than the flow rate of the cold LNG streams in the second operating mode.

Abstract: A method for producing hydrocarbons in a gas lift well is disclosed. A gas lift rate of the well is monitored while producing hydrocarbons according to an initial gas lift performance curve. One or more well performance parameters for the well are monitored. Disturbances in the well are detected while monitoring the well performance parameters. Transience in the well is modeled. A new gas lift performance curve is derived based on the detected disturbances, the modeled transience, and the initial gas lift performance curve. An optimal allocation of gas lift is determined from the new gas lift performance curve. Hydrocarbons are produced using the determined optimal allocation of gas lift.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to the adsorption and separation of nitrogen in a feed stream (e.g., natural gas) using zeolite ITQ-55 as the adsorbent. A process is disclosed for removing impurities such as nitrogen while producing a high pressure hydrocarbon product. The process involves passing the feed stream through a bed of an adsorbent comprising zeolite ITQ-55 to adsorb nitrogen from the feed stream, thereby producing a product stream depleted in nitrogen at pressure as feed condition without need of recompression. The zeolite ITQ-55 has a mean crystal particle size within the range of from about 0.01 microns to about 40 microns. The feed stream is exposed to the zeolite ITQ-55 at effective conditions for performing a kinetic separation, in which the kinetic separation exhibits greater kinetic selectivity for nitrogen than for methane. The system and method of this disclosure are particularly suitable for use with feed streams utilizing rapid cycle PSA operations.
