Abstract: A novel and improved method for performing transmit power control is described. A signal is transmitted at a transmit power and includes a traffic channel transmitted at a traffic channel transmit power, and a pilot channel transmitting at a pilot channel transmit power. The receive energy of the pilot channel is measured, and compared with a threshold. A power control command is generated and transmitted to the system generating the signal. This determines whether the command is to be applied to either the traffic channel, the pilot channel, or the entire signal. The power of the determined channel(s) is adjusted accordingly.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing inter-system hard handoff between communication systems or inter-frequency hard handoff within a CDMA communication system is disclosed. The purpose of this invention is to reduce the probability of dropped calls during inter-system hard handoff. In the event that a hard handoff attempt is unsuccessful, the mobile station will return to the original system with information which the communication system of the present invention uses to assist in the performance of future handoff attempts. Alternatively, with no handoff attempt made, the mobile station monitors the destination system then returns to the original system with information used to assist in subsequent handoff attempts. The information returned from monitoring a CDMA system consists of results of a search for one or more pilots given at offsets in a specific list provided to the mobile station by the base station or a set of offsets based upon a predetermined search algorithm.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling transmission power in a mobile communication system is disclosed. The method disclosed provides for a closed-loop power control method. A characteristic of a propagation path between a first communication station and a second communication station is determined and a power control step size selected accordingly. Closed loop power control commands are received at the first communication station and its transmission energy is adjusted in accordance with the closed loop power control commands and the power control step size.

Abstract: Controlling transmission energy in a variable rate communication system that gates out portions of a frame in a predetermined and predicable fashion. In particular, the present invention describes a method and apparatus that identifies closed loop power control commands that have been generated erroneously based on portions of a frame that have been gated. The identified power control commands are ignored. In an alternative embodiment, if identification of the erroneous power control commands occurs after response measures have been taken, the transmitting station responds by setting the transmission energy back to the state it would have been in had the erroneous power control commands been identified prior to the response.

Abstract: A novel and improved method for performing paging is described. In one embodiment of the invention a searcher is used to detect spread spectrum signals. Samples received RF signals are stored in a sample buffer. During standby mode, the samples are gathered during paging slots assigned to the mobile. A set of searches are performed on the samples, and if pilot signals are detected additional demodulation is performed to detect paging messages. The resulting set of demodulation data may be combined to increase detection. After a page message has been detected, additional demodulation resources may be activated to processes more complete page messages, or other information channels. In one embodiment of the invention, the searcher includes a demodulator to perform quick page detection without the use of finger elements to reduce idle mode power consumption.

Abstract: A system for assisting hard handoffs between communications systems S1, S2 in a mobile phone system is disclosed. A mobile station M1, M2, M3 moving from an originating system S1 to a destination system S2 attempts to acquire a base station C1 - C5 in the destination system. If it fails to do so, a set of parameter data is transmitted from the mobile station to the system S1. System S1 uses the parameter data to generate a search list of alternative base stations within the system S2. The mobile phone then attempts to acquire one of the base stations in the system S2. The parameter data transmitted by the mobile station may include the signal energy of pilot signals from system S2.

Abstract: A forward link power control mechanism in a remote station (6) measures reverse link power control bits which are transmitted by one or more base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) on a forward traffic channel (10a). At the remote station (6) the reverse link power control bits from multiple base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) or multiple signal paths are measured, combined, and filtered to yield an improved measurement of the forward link signal quality. The reverse link (12a, 12b) power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in the power control loop. The remote station (6) generates a set of forward link power control bits in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) in communication with the remote station (6). Each base station (4a, 4b, 4n) adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel (10a) in accordance to its measurement of the forward link power control bit. The gains of the forward traffic channels (10a) of the base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) are corrected periodically so that erroneous reception of the forward link power control bits by the base stations do not accumulate.
