    Abstract: An integrated search processor used in a modem for a spread spectrum communications system buffers receive samples and utilizes a time sliced transform processor operating on successive offsets from the buffer. The search processor autonomously steps through a search as configured by a microprocessor specified search parameter set, which can include the group of antennas to search over, the starting offset and width of the search window to search over, and the number of Walsh symbols to accumulate results at each offset. The search processor calculates the correlation energy at each offset, and presents a summary report of the best paths found in the search to use for demodulation element reassignment. The search is done in a linear fashion independent of the probability that a signal being searched for was transmitted at any given time.

    Abstract: The cellular communication system includes a number of base stations through which a mobile unit communicates. The mobile unit maintains a list of active base stations with which it can communicate. One of the active stations is in communication with the mobile and uses this communication to measure the round-trip-delay between mobile and station. This delay is compared with a threshold and if this is exceeded, and the base station is a boundary station, then a hard hand-off is executed. The mobile can also monitor candidate base stations and if a triggering pilot signal is detected a hand-off can be triggered. Preferably the handoff can be between base stations controlled by different mobile switching centres.

    Abstract: A packet-based processing system suitable for various applications, such as for a base station or a terminal in a wireless communication system, is described. The packet-based processing system may include multiple processing modules and at least one transport module. The processing modules may send packets to one another via a common packet interface and may operate asynchronously. The transport module(s) may forward the packets sent by the processing modules and may operate asynchronously with respect to the processing modules. Each processing module may include a network interface, at least one buffer, a packet parser, a packet builder, and at least one processing unit. Each processing module may support at least one service. Each packet may include a header and a payload. The header may include a source service address for a source service sending the packet and a destination service address for a recipient service receiving the packet.

    Abstract: In a communications network, a network user communicates through a remote unit (30) with another user via at least one base station (100). The communications network includes a first mobile switching center (MSC-I) which controls communications through a first set of base stations including a first base station (100). The remote unit (30) stores a list of active base stations which has an entry corresponding to each base station with which active communication is established. The first base station (100) has an entry on the list of active base stations. The first base station (100) measures a round trip delay of an active communication signal between the first base station (100) and the remote unit (30). A handoff of the active communication signal is initiated if the round trip delay of the active communication exceeds a threshold if the first base station (100) is designated as a reference base station. Alternatively, the remote unit (30) also stores a list of candidate base stations comprising an entry corresponding to each base station through which active communication may be possible but is not established. A handoff of the active communication signal is initiated if the list of candidate base stations comprises an entry corresponding to a triggering pilot signal.
