    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further improve the thermal shock resistance, oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance of a carbon-containing refractory.SOLUTION: A carbon-containing refractory containing 15.5-95 mass% of AlOC is provided. As a source of the AlOC, an aluminum oxycarbide composition material containing 3.1-6.5 mass% of carbon is used. The material is produced by adding one or more selected from silicon carbide, boron carbide, aluminum nitride, boron nitride and a metal to a carbonaceous material and an alumina material, and melting them in an arc furnace.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refractory composition excellent in formability and forming stability and capable of obtaining refractory having high fixed carbon content and excellent corrosion resistance and further obtaining dense refractory. SOLUTION: The refractory composition is prepared by blending a binder resin formed by incorporating a phenol resin, 2-furaldehyde and a reaction catalyst for reacting the phenol resin with the 2-furaldehyde in refractory aggregate. The 2-furaldehyde acts as a solvent for the phenol resin, enhances the formability, easily reacts with the phenol resin under heat using the catalyst and is carbonized by firing to obtain the refractory having high fixed carbon content and excellent corrosion resistance. Further, because the 2-furaldehyde reacts with the phenol resin to be bonded with the phenol resin by the action of the reaction catalyst, most of the 2-furaldehyde is not volatilized to give the dense refractory.
