Abstract: A skin whitening composition containing a puerarin or its derivative is provided to suppress the activation of tyrosinase and inhibit melanogenesis. A skin whitening composition comprises 0.0001-10 weight% of puerarin of the chemical formula 1 or its derivative as an active ingredient. The puerarin is obtained by extracting and purifying from Pueraria lobata Ohwi. The puerarin derivative is denoted by the chemical formula 2. In the chemical formula 2, R is alpha -1,6- glucosyl. The composition has the skin whitening effect by suppressing the expression of TRP-1(tryptophan biosynthesis 1) and TRP-2 genes and suppressing the protein expression of MITF(microphthalmia-associated transcription factor). The composition is used in a form of skin softener, astringent, nutrition skin, eye cream, nutrition cream, massage cream, cleansing cream, cleansing foam, cleansing water, powder, essence, and pack.
