    Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for classifying a target detected by radar and a method of operating the same, in which a Demster-Shafer algorithm is used to classify the target. The apparatus includes a target detection unit to detect a target and measure a characteristic of the target based on a predetermined classification criteria; a credibility calculation unit to generate a set of hypothesis corresponding to the predetermined target classification items based on a Demster-Shafer algorithm, to generate an interesting elements corresponding to a sub set of the hypothesis set and calculating a credibility for each individual interesting element from the measured characteristics of the target; a normalizing unit to normalize the credibility calculated for each individual interesting element into a form for calculating probabilities; and a control unit to calculate a probability for the classification items by using the normalized credibility for each interesting element, and classifying the target to any one of the classification items based on the calculated probability.
