Abstract:
PURPOSE: A composition containing an extract of Opuntia ficus-indica var. Saboten Makino and a compound isolated therefrom which exhibit antioxidative action and nerve cell protecting activity is provided. The composition inhibits neurotoxicity caused by cell death and exhibits nerve cell protecting effect on animal models of brain ischemia and is thus expected to be useful for prevention and treatment of cerebral apoplexy, cerebral concussion, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, myocardial infarction and brain infarction. CONSTITUTION: A composition for protecting nerve cells contains an ethyl acetate extract of Opuntia ficus-indica and a compound isolated from therefrom as an active ingredient. The ethyl acetate extract contains campherol, dihydroquercetin or quercetin-3-methyl ether as an active ingredient and is prepared by adding 0.1 to 10L of an alcohol solvent to stems, fruits or processed fruits of Opuntia ficus-indica, followed by leaving them at room temperature for 4 to 5 days, filtering, distilling under reduced pressure and then extracting with 0.5 to 2L of ethyl acetate.

PURPOSE: A new use of propolis and caffeic acid phenethyl(CAPE) ester as a component thereof is provided. Therefore, the propolis and CAPE can be used as a preventive and therapeutic agent for a disease generated from estrogen deficiency, or nitric oxide inhibitors, angiogenesis inhibitors. CONSTITUTION: An estrogen agonist contains propolis and caffeic acid phenethyl ester as an effective component, and an estrogen agonist composition is obtained by adding a pharmaceutically acceptable conventional excipient, carrier or adjuvant to the propolis and CAPE. The composition contains one formulation of: powder, a tablet, capsule, liquid and dispersing agent; a patch agent for mucosal absorption or transdermal absorption; and an injection.

PURPOSE: Provided are the Gardeniae fructus extract having free radical scavenging activity and antiviral activity, novel compounds isolated therefrom and the use thereof for prevention and treatment of viral diseases, such as AIDS. CONSTITUTION: The Gardeniae fructus extract is obtained by extracting Gardeniae fructus with water or organic solvents. It contains as an active ingredent, methyl-0-caffeoyl-4-0-sinapolylquinate, methyl 3,5-0-dicarffeoyl-4-0-(3-hydroxy-3-methyl)glutaroylquinate, ethyl 5-0-caffeoyl-4-0-sinapoylquinate, methyl -0-caffeoyl--0-sinapoylquinate, ethyl 3-0-caffeoyl-5-0-sinapoylquinate, 3,5-0-dicaffeoylquinic acid, and 4,5-0-dicaffeoylquinic acid.
