A power transmission system of a hybrid vehicle comprises a planetary gear unit provided in a transaxle housing of the hybrid vehicle and including a first planetary gear(12) and a second planetary gear(14) and a third planetary gear(16), a driving motor unit(20) including a first motor unit(22) connected to the third planetary gear so as to transmit power and a second motor unit(24) provided to transmit power to a driving shaft through the second planetary gear so as to operate the driving shaft together with power generated by the engine, a clutch unit(30) connected to the planetary gear unit so as to enable the hybrid vehicle to run by changing an operation mode of a transmission at least a critical mechanical point wherein a mode conversion between a first compound-split mode and a second compound-split mode occurs, and a controller(40) controlling the operation mode of the driving motor unit and the clutch unit according to an operation mode of the hybrid vehicle.

Abstract: A dual mode power train for a hybrid electric vehicle and a method of controlling the dual mode power train are provided to operate the power train in a compound split mode, in which a first clutch is connected while a second clutch is disconnected in a high gear ratio region, whereas the first clutch is disconnected while the second clutch is connected in a low gear ration region, thereby allowing the power train to be operated in a wider range of efficient gear ratio regions. A dual mode power train for a hybrid electric vehicle has first, second and third planetary gear sets(11,17,27). The first planetary gear set has a first carrier(1) connected to an engine, a first ring gear(3) connected to a driving wheel(5), and a first sun gear(7) connected to a second motor generator(9). The second planetary gear set has a second carrier(13) connected to the first ring gear, and a second sun gear(15) connected to the first sun gear. The third planetary gear set has a third sun gear(19) connected to the second ring gear of the second planetary gear set, and a third carrier(23) connected to a first motor generator(25). A first clutch(31) connects or disconnects the second sun gear and a third ring gear(29) of the third planetary gear set. A second clutch(33) switches the third sun gear between a fixed state and a rotary state. The second clutch is installed between a power train case(35) and the third ring gear. First, second, and third planetary gear sets are comprised of singe pinion planetary gears. In a method of controlling the dual mode power train, with mechanical point where the speed of the second motor generator becomes zero set as a reference, disconnecting the first clutch and connecting the second clutch in a region having a high gear ratio, whereas in a region having low gear ratio, the first clutch is connected while the second clutch is disconnected.
