Free-cutting steel for manufacturing annulus gear contains Fe as base metal, C 0.21~0.23 weight%, Si 0.23~0.27 weight%, Mn 0.86~0.90 weight%, P 0.025 weight% or less, S 0.015~0.025 weight%, Al 0.020~0.030 weight%, and inevitable impurities. In addition, B 0.0050~0.0070 weight%, N2 0.010~0.015 weight%, and Bi 0.15 weight% or less are contained to form BN for improvement of machinability. C serves to secure rigidity and surface roughness. Si and Mn serve to improve machinability by forming SiO2 and MnS, respectively. S serves as nucleation site of BN. Al serves to miniaturize the grain size.
