Abstract: Various embodiments disclosed relate to a surfacing film. The surfacing film includes a base layer. The base layer includes a thermoplastic polyurethane film comprising a reaction product of a reaction mixture of a diisocyanate, a polyester polyol having a melting temperature of at least about 30 ºC; and a diol chain extender. There are many reasons to use the surfacing film including easier and more cost effective manufacturing of the surfacing film by directly extruding the base layer by mixing the reaction mixture in an extruder. Another reason to use the surfacing film is that the film has improved resistance to discoloration. Another reason to use the film is that the film shows good toughness.

Abstract: Articles are described comprising a substrate and a hardcoat layer disposed on the substrate. The hardcoat layer comprises the hydrolyzed and condensed reaction product of a composition comprising: i) first hydrophobic silane monomer(s) having the formula R1Si(OR)3 wherein R and R1 is methyl or ethyl; ii) optional second silane monomer(s) having the formula (R2)4-mSi(OR)m or Si(OR)4, wherein R, R1 and R2 are organic groups with the proviso that R1 is not methyl or ethyl and m ranges from 1 to 3. The hardcoat layer may further comprises 10 to 30 wt.% silica nanoparticles. A surface layer comprising a hydrophilic silane may be disposed on the hardcoat layer. Also described is a method of using an article having a rewritable surface, hardcoat coating compositions, and methods of making hardcoat compositions and articles.

A siliceous layer is disposed on the hardcoat layer. The siliceous layer has a porosity of no greater than 10% and a thickness no greater than 1 micron. In some embodiments, the article further comprises a surface layer comprising a zwitterionic compound bonded to the siliceous layer.

Abstract: Described herein are compositions including a silanol compound that is suitably synthesized, stored, and coated from an aqueous solution. Once coated and cured on a suitable surface, the aqueous silanol compositions result in cleanable and abrasion resistant surfaces, such as dry-erase surfaces that release permanent marker by rubbing with a dry cloth or towel. Also disclosed herein are methods of making the silanol compounds, methods of making cleanable substrates, and cleanable substrates suitably formed using the disclosed methods.

In another embodiment, the siliceous layer comprises 10- 50 atomic percent carbon and the article further comprises an organic polymeric base member or a hardcoat layer. Also described are coating compositions comprising at least one C8-C17 hydrocarbon silane compound and at least one C18-C36 hydrosilane compound.
