    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply obtain an organic solid illuminant which comprises a solid aromatic compound bearing an imino group, manifests luminous phenomenon even in the solid state and is stable and excellent in fluorescence properties. SOLUTION: This solid illuminant comprises a solid aromatic compound bearing an imino group of the formula: -C=NR (R is H, a functional group or organic group, preferably an aliphatic, aromatic, carbocyclic aromatic, heterocyclic aromatic, hydroxyl), typically N-benzylidene)methylamine, N-(naphthylidene)aniline, N-phenyl-troporone-1-imine, N-(α-methylbenzylidene) methylamine, N-phenyl-troporon-1-imine or the like. There compounds are obtained by condensation reaction between an aromatic aldehyde or an aromatic ketone and an amine.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain the subject complex exhibiting high threeorder nonlinear optical characteristics and useful as a nonlinear optical material by a simple operation by absorbing iodine vapor into a solid complex containing an iodogold[I] anion. SOLUTION: (A) A solid complex composed of (i) an iodogold[I] anion and (ii) a quaternary ammonium ion, preferably a complex represented by formula I (R to R are each a hydrocarbon) is brought into contact with iodine vapor to absorb iodine and excess iodine is released in the absence of iodine vapor to provide the objective complex of formula II. Furthermore, release of excess iodine is preferably carried out by allowing the complex to stand in the air.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a method for a controlling reproducible nonlinear optical effect with high accuracy by introducing halogen into a compd. exhibiting a cubic nonlinear optical characteristic. CONSTITUTION: Electrons are non-localized in a nonlinear optical material by the interaction of adjacent molecules and the non-local electrons contribute to the development of the nonlinear optical characteristics. The halogen molecules advance easily into the compd. and the advanced halogen intrudes into the compd. and weakens or cuts off the intermolecular interaction possessed by the material when the compd. is exposed to the vapor of the halogen. The electrons non-localized among the molecules are, therefore, localized into the single molecule and the nonlinear optical characteristic is deactivated. The advanced halogen may be removed from the inside of the compd. by heating or irradiation with laser beams, etc., insofar as the halogen is not powerfully restrained by the compd. The compd. is capable of restoring the state exhibiting the original intermolecular interaction when the advanced halogen is removed and, therefore, the nonlinear optical characteristics is restored to the original magnitude.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain such a nonlinear optical material that the nonlinear optical const. is increased, a uniform thin film can be easily obtd., thermal property of the material is stabilized in air, and the material can be easily handled, by using a plane-type complex obtd. by producing a chelate from two ligands having two C=N double bonds with the nitrogen atoms bonded to metal. CONSTITUTION:The material consists of a plane-type complex obtd. by producing a chelate from two ligands having two C=N double bonds with the nitrogen atoms bonded to metal. This plane-type org. metal complex and the production method of a thin film are not specified but any method can be used. As a typical method of the complex which is generally and preferably adopted, reaction of a compd. which acts as the ligand and a metal chloride is effected in an alcohol soln. By this method, the object plane-type org. metal complex can be obtd. The thin film is produced by vacuum vapor deposition or solvent coating method. In this case, if necessary, other material such as halogen except the ligand comp. may be added.
