    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a polymerized film, which controls interaction between a substrate and a liquid crystal, on a cell substrate by incorporating a divinyl compound into the liquid crystal and photopolymerizing the divinyl compound on a cell substrate by being irradiated with light from a transparent substrate side. SOLUTION: A polymerized film is formed on a liquid crystal cell substrate in which a liquid crystal is encapsulated between two substrates at least one of which is a transparent substrate. For this purpose, a divinyl compound is incorporated into the liquid crystal and photopolymerized on the substrate by being irradiated with light from the side of the transparent substrate. The used divinyl compound has two vinyl groups in its molecule and is a low molecular weight compound having a molecular weight of 1,000 or lower, preferably 400 or lower. The lower limit of the molecular weight is normally about 250. The divinyl compound expressed by the formula is preferably used. In the formula, A denotes a linear molecule backbone part and R3-R8 each denotes hydrogen or a substituent. The linear molecule backbone part A includes a linear bivalent aliphatic group and the like.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a contrast of a non-image portion by providing a reversible cholesteric reflection layer on a support base, providing a reversible heat color developing layer between the reflection layer and the base, and providing the reflection layer so as to be fixed at a specific temperature. SOLUTION: A reversible heat color developing layer 2 made of a composition containing an electron donative chromogenic compound and an electron acceptive compound is formed on a support 1, and a reversible cholesteric reflection layer (Ch reflection layer) 3 containing a cholesteric liquid crystal phase or a thermotropic liquid crytalline compound for forming an isotropic phase is formed on the layer 2. As needed, an intermediate layer 4 is formed between the layer 2 and the layer 3, a surface protective layer 5 is formed on the surface of the layer 3, and a substrate layer 6 or the like is provided between the support 1 and the layer 2. The layer 3 is provided so that a selectively reflecting state of the cholesteric liquid crystal phase displayed when the layer 3 is heated to a glass transition temperature or above can be fixed to the transition temperature or below.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for recording a multicolor image of two or more colors including a color having a short wavelength even without realizing a large cooling speed by using a cholesteric liquid crystal compound. SOLUTION: A heat-sensitive recording layer containing a thermotropic liquid crystal compound for forming a cholesteric liquid crystal compound is provided between two transparent substrates. In this case, after the recording layer is heated to a temperature exhibiting an isotropic phase or the cholesteric liquid crystal, the layer is cooled at a specific cooling speed. Thus, a cholesteric glass phase is formed. An area of the heat-sensitive recording layer of a recording material exhibiting a selected reflecting color caused by a spiral molecular arrangement is heated and cooled and an image of a first selected reflecting color is recorded, and a pressing force is applied to the area of the image of the first selected reflecting color, thereby color changing to a second selected reflecting color.
