Abstract: A sphere of carbon which encloses an empty space and has pores formed in the shell thereof so as to provide free passage between the interior and the exterior of the sphere is obtained by coating a spherical core with a layer of finely divided coal and subjecting the coated sphere to a heat treatment at a temperature higher than the decomposition temperature of the substance of which the core is formed. The heat treatment causes the core to be thermally decomposed and evacuated from the coat which, by this time, has been hardened to a shell. A lightweight hollow sphere of activated carbon which has been activated not merely on the outer surface of the sphere but equally on the inner surface defining the empty space is produced by calcining for activation the said sphere of finely divided coal, with the said fine pores retained intact.

Abstract: A process for the production of shaped articles of high density graphite having excellent mold-releasing property which comprises incorporating amorphous carbon powder such as powdery coke or artificial graphite powder with about 3-20% by weight of boric acid or boron oxide as a sintering-promoting agent, and baking the mixture under a pressure of 150-500 kg/cm2 without the aid of a binding agent such as pitch. Shaped articles of high density graphite possessing excellent mechanical strength are obtained by this process.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a light carbon fiber carbon composite material with an excellent heat resistance property, and having high strength by carrying out the primary carboni zation in laminating carbon fibers and a plate comprising pitch, and making it being infusible then, after that, performing the secondary carbonization and third carboniza tion in turn. CONSTITUTION:A plate made by infiltrating melted pitch into the bundle of carbon fibers is laminated to have a desired thickness, and then put into a mold in order that the primary carbonization is conducted such that a load is applied thereon from the upper part, and heated by the temperature in the range of 400 - 500 deg.C in a non- oxiding atmosphere, however, the load applied thereon should be selected in the range of 0.5 - 5kg/cm . And, after an infusible treatment is performed by heating it in the range of 150 - 400 deg.C in an oxidizing atmosphere, the secondary carbonizing treatment is conducted by heating it at the temperature of the range of 600 - 800 deg.C under a load in the non-oxidizing atmosphere, however, the load should be selected in the range of 5 - 20kg/cm . Furthermore, the third carbonizing treatment at the temperature of 800 deg.C or high in the non-oxidizing atmosphere. As a result, a carbon fiber carbon composite material can be obtained, in which fibers being light weight, having an excellent heat resisting property, and high strength is arranged in one direction.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title material being difficult to fuse to and react with molten glass, having excellent oxidation resistance, and free of cracking by incorporating carbide powder into coke powder contg. more than a specified amt. of residual volatile matter. CONSTITUTION:The material consists of 60-98vol.% coke powder having >=4wt.% residual volatile matter, when the apparent density is found to be 1.35g/cm , and the balance sintered body of carbide powder. The carbide of groups IVa, Va and VI metal, B4C, and SiC are preferably used as the carbide. The coke produced at a relatively low temp. of =4wt.%. When the residual volatile matter is less than 4wt.%, the mechanochemical effect by milling is insufficient, the product is not densified, and a high-strength material is not obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled spherical graphite body having excellent fluidity and filling property and useful as an electrical conductivity providing additive for rubber, etc., and a mold releasing agent for die casting by adding a boron compd. to fine spherical or porous carbon, and heating the mixture at high temp. in an inert gas. CONSTITUTION:A boron compd. selected from boric acid (alkali metal salt) and boron oxide is added to the extent of >=3wt% (expressed in terms of boron) to fine spherical carbon such as spherical carbon black having 10-100nm diameter or porous carbon such as coal activated carbon having >=500m /g specific surface. The mixture is charged, for example, in a graphite vessel, and heated at >=2,200 deg.C in an inert gas such as Ar and N2.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a beta-sialon.silicon carbide composite material having excellent strength, hardness and oxidation resistance, etc., by mixing a silicon nitride and silicon carbide in an aqueous solution of a soluble aluminum salt, drying, calcining and sintering. CONSTITUTION:A soluble aluminum salt (e.g. aluminum nitrate or aluminum sulfate) is dissolved in water. Next, a silicon nitride and silicon carbide (e.g. silicon carbide powder or fiber) are added to said aqueous solution and mixed in a ball mill, etc., then dried. By said process, assemblage of uniform granules of silicon nitride and silicon carbide powders having the surfaces covered with aluminum salt. Thus, the assemblage is calcined and sintered to afford a sialon.silicon carbide composite material having high strength. Besides, character such as electric conductivity, thermal conductivity or thermal shock resistance is able to be controlled with an amount of adding silicon carbide.
