Abstract: Disclosed is a novel aromatic ester compound represented by the general formula in which Pn is a 1,4-phenylene group, R1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R2 is a group selected from the group consisting of perfluoroalkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, cyano group, nitro group, 2,2-dicyanoethenyl group and methylsulfonyl group and the subscript n is a number of 2, 3 or 4. These aromatic ester compounds are useful as a second-order non-linear optical material in the ultraviolet wavelength range so that a resin film containing the compound has a good second-order non-linear optical coefficient d33 of 2-4x10-9 esu.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new aromatic ester oligomer giving organic secondary nonlinear optical materials having good optical transparency and secondary nonlinear optical characteristics and not causing the deterioration of the characteristics with the passage of time. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [R and R are each H or methyl; (n) and (n') are each 4-10; (m) is 2-5], for example, 4-[4'-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy) phenylcarbonyloxy]benzoic acid 6-acryloyloxyhexyl ester. The compound of formula I is preferably obtained by a method comprising converting an aromatic carboxylic acid of formula II [for example, 4-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy)benzoic acid] into the corresponding acid halide by the use of thionyl chloride, etc., and subsequently reacting the acid halide with a compound of formula III (for example, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid 6-acryloyloxyhexyl ester) in the presence of a hydrogen halide-capturing agent such as triethylamine in an organic solvent such as tetrahydrofuran.

SOLUTION: This novel compound is represented by formula I (X is a dialkylamino, an alkylthio; Y is nitro or cyano; n is 1-3), typically the compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is prepared by reaction of an aromatic carboxylic halide of formula III (Hal is a halogen), for example, 4- dimethylaminobenzoyl chloride, with a p-substituted phenol, for example, 4- cyanophenol or the like in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor in an inert solvent such as acetone and the like.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound excellent in secondary nonlinear optical characteristics, having excellent optical transparency. SOLUTION: This compound is that one expressed by formula I [R is a lower alkyl; R is perfluoroalkyl, cyano, nitro, 2,2-dicyanoethenyl or methylsulfonyl; (n) is 1-3], e.g. 4-anisic acid 4-cyanophenyl-ester. The compound of formula I is obtained by adding p-substituted phenol expressed by formula III little by little into a solvent contg. an aromatic carboxylic halide expressed by formula II (X is a halide) at room temperature or under iced conditions, reacting with each other in the presence of a hydrogen halide catcher (e.g. a tertiary amine, such as trimethylamine, triethylamine, pyridine), preferably, in an inert solvent (e.g. acetone, methylethylketone, diethylether) for 1-30 hrs., washing the resulting product with water and separating the organic layer to remove the solvent.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To form a TiN film having excellent adhesive property and wear resistance by specifying the accelerating voltage for nitrogen ion, current density, Ti vapor-deposition rate, total nitrogen ion input, and Ti vapor-deposition amt. at the time of forming the hard TiN layer on the steel product such as a rolling roll, a bearing, and a metallic mold by ion implantation and vacuum deposition. CONSTITUTION:When the rolling roll, bearing, metallic mold, etc., requiring wear resistance is case-hardened, a hard TiN layer is formed on the surface of the steel member to be treated by an ion mixing process wherein ion implantation and vacuum deposition are simultaneously or alternately carried out. The accelarating voltage for nitrogen ion in this case is controlled to 10-40kV, the current density of nitrogen ion to 0.5-2.0mA/cm , the Ti vapor deposition rate to >5Angstrom /sec, the total nitrogen input to >10 ion/cm , and the Ti vapor- deposition amt. to >5X10 ion/cm . A TiN film having excellent adhesive strength and water resistance is formed on the surface of the steel member to be treated.
