Abstract: A novel ceramic material affording a ceramic molded bodies having a high toughness and a high tensile strength is disclosed which comprises a smectite clay mineral having at least a portion of ion-exchangeable cations thereof ion-exchanged with bismuth ions. The ceramic material is prepared by treating a smectite clay mineral with an aqueous solution containing bismuth ions to ion-exchange at least a portion of ion-exchangeable cations thereof with bismuth ions.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To impart high photocatalytic activity, by repeatedly applying sulfurization treatment and oxidation treatment to a composite oxide of tantalum and an alkaline earth metal to obtain a tantalum compound containing SO2 and developing photocatalytic action by visible light. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of alkaline earth metal oxide and tantalum oxide is baked to form composite oxide, and nickel oxide is added to said composite oxide and the resulting composition is again baked to obtain particles of a tantalum compound. Next, said particles are heated to about 800 deg.C in a sulfurizing gaseous atmosphere composed of carbon disulfide or methyl sulfide to obtain partial sulfide which is, in turn, heated to about 700 deg.C in an oxygen-containing atmosphere to be converted to oxide. These sulfurization treatment and oxidation treatment are alternately performed over three cycles to prepare a tantalum compound containing SO2 and developing photocatalytic action by visible light.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title highly active catalyst by adding an aq. soln. of cadmium sulfide powder and an alkali(earth) metal to an aq. soln. of a platinum or palladium complex to alkalinize the soln., evaporating the whole material to dryness, and then heating the obtained material in an inert gas. CONSTITUTION:Cadmium sulfide powder is added to the aq. soln. of a platinum or palladium complex. The hydroxide of an alkali metal or an alkaline-earth metal is then added to the mixture to alkalinize the mixture. The mixture of the cadmium sulfide, metallic complex, and water are evaporated to dryness while sufficiently agitating the mixture, and the obtained material is crushed by a mortar. The material is charged in a quartz boat, and heated preferably at 150-400 deg.C for 1-10hr in an inert gas atmosphere to obtain the cadimium sulfide powdery photocatalyst deposited with platinum or palladium. The catalyst exhibits high activity in the generation of hydrogen from an aq. sodium sulfide soln. under the radiation of light.

CONSTITUTION:A smectite type clay mineral such as montmorillonite is added to an aq. soln. of bismuth nitrate or basic bismuth nitrate, heated and stirred. The resulting product is separated by filtration and dried or heat-treated at room temp. or above, preferably >=80 deg.C.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a compound having optically catalytic activity, by subjecting an alloy containing lanthanum and nickel to sulfuration and oxidation treatment. CONSTITUTION:A compound having optically catalytic activity obtained by subjecting an alloy containing lanthanum and nickel to sulfuration and oxidation treatment. For example, lanthanum pentanickel is heat-treated in carbon disulfide at 500 deg.C for 30min, heat-treated in oxygen at 200 deg.C for 30min and these operations are repeated for three times to give a substance which leaves the structure of lanthanum pentanickel and yet has the surface partially converted into sulfides and oxides. Consequently, a particle system showing optically catalytic activity, having crystal phase of nickel sulfide, nickel oxide, lanthanum sulfide and lanthanum sulfate on the surface of the particles consisting essentially of lanthanum pentanickel is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To impact photocatalytic activity due to visible light, by mixing a small amount of nickel oxide with composite oxide of a rare earth element and an alkalie earth metal element and, after baking the resulting mixture, alternately and repeatedly applying sulfiding treatment and oxidizing treatment to the baked one. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of an alkaline earth metal and a rare earth element compound is baked to form composite oxide of both of them and, after nickel oxide was added to the composition oxide, the obtained composition is again baked to form a powder having nickel dispersed therein. This powder is heated to about 800-1,000 deg.C in a sulfiding gaseous atmosphere containing carbon disulfide and methyl sulfide, etc., as sulfiding agents to by subjected to sulfiding treatment. The formed partial sulfide is heated to about 600 deg.C in the presence oxygen or in an oxygen-containing atmosphere to be converted to oxide. By alternately applying the above-mentioned sulfiding treatment and oxidizing treatment three times, a photocatalyst substance having both of photooxidizing and photoreducing functions is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a hafnium compound having photocatalytic activity excellent in light absorbing capacity and chemical stability, by forming a SO - or SO3 group to the surface of composite oxide of hafnium containing a specific sub stance. CONSTITUTION:Composite oxide of hafnium oxide/alkaline earth metal oxide (strontium oxide or barium oxide) baked along with nickel oxide mixed is heated to about 900 deg.C in an atmosphere of a sulfiding agent weaker than carbon disufide or methyl sulfide to perform sulfiding treatment. Subsequently, threated composite is oxidized at about 700 deg.C in oxygen to obtain a hafnium compound of which the surface was doped with a SO - or SO3 group. This hafnium com pound has improved light absorbing characteristics enlarged from an ultraviolet region to a visible region and high photocatalytic activity and photo-cracking efficiency.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compd., which contains SO2 on the surface of the particle of the compd. with high dispersibility and reveals a photocatalytic action with visible radiation, by applying repeatedly a sulfurizing treatment and an oxidizing treatment to a composite oxide of Nb and alkaline earth metal. CONSTITUTION:The powders are obtained by adding Ni oxide at need to the composite oxide obtained by calcining the mixture of Nb oxide and the alkaline earth metal oxide and re-calcining, and the obtained powders are subjected to a sulfurizing treatment by heating almost at 800 deg.C in the sulfurizing gaseous atmosphere contg. a sulfurizing agent such as CS2 or (CH3)2S. Then the obtained partial sulfide is subjected to an oxidizing treatment by heating almost at 600 deg.C in O2 or in an atmosphere contg. O2. And then, the titled compd. is obtained by repeatedly subjecting to the sulfurizing treatment and the oxidizing treatment plural times and allowing SO2 to form on the surface of the composite oxide particle with high dispersibility.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a single molecule aggregate capable of unidirectionally transmitting electrons by forming a polymer consisting essentially of zirconium contg. platinum or nickel and oxygen and contg. an alkoxyl group as a free- radical polymer having photocatalytic activity. CONSTITUTION:A polymer consisting essentially of zirconium contg. platinum or nickel and oxygen and contg. an alkoxyl group is formed as the free-radical polymer having photocatalytic activity. The catalyst is brought into contact with a strongly electron-donative liq. substance such as ethanol or an aq. soln. of a strongly electron-donative solid substance such as glucose, and visible light is radiated on the liq. or soln. Consequently, a reducing substance such as hydrogen and the oxidation product of the electron donor are produced. An amorphous substance consisting of a single molecule aggregate and capable of unidirectionally transmitting electrons excited by the light in the molecule is obtained in this way.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a zinc compd. which excels in light absorption power and chemical stability and has photocatalytic activity grinding and mixing zinc oxide and cadmium oxide with an electromagnetic type oscillating mortar then subjecting the mixture to sulfidation and oxidation treatments as well as platinum addition, thereby forming Zn and Cd with a high degree of dispersion. CONSTITUTION:A hydroquinone is added to a mixture composed of zinc oxide and cadmium oxide and the mixture is ground and mixed with the electromag netic oscillating mortar. The mixture is then subjected to the sulfidation treat ment by using a weak sulfiding agent such as carbon disulfide or methyl sulfide then to the oxidation treatment in oxygen. Since the mixture is ground by the electromagnetic type oscillating mortar, the concn. of the specific points on the particle surface of zinc oxide to stabilize the isolated Zn is increased, and since the hydroquinone is added thereto, the active state is maintained until the specific point is subjected to the sulfidation treatment. Platinum is added to the resultant powder and a semiconductor catalyst having the high photocatalytic activity stable in the visible light region is obtd.
