    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable multifunction device accompanying a more transparent and intuitive user interface for instant messaging.SOLUTION: Portable electronic equipment for instant messaging is disclosed. One embodiment includes a graphic user interface (GUI) of the portable electronic equipment accompanying touch screen display. The GUI has a set of messages to be exchanged between a user of the equipment and another individual. The set of messages is displayed in a chronological order. In response to detection of a scroll gesture consisting of substantial vertical movement of user contact with the touch screen display, display of the messages is scrolled based on a direction of the scroll gesture. The detection of the scroll gesture is substantially independent of a horizontal position of the user contact with the touch screen display.
