    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing acrylic acid or an acrylic acid ester, comprising step A, optionally, step B and optionally, step C as follows: A. cooling a gaseous reaction mixture formed during the gas phase oxidation process for producing acrylic acid and containing acrylic acid using an acrylic acid containing at most 5 wt.% water to form a gaseous mixture containing (meth)acrylic acid; B. separating the gaseous mixture containing acrylic acid to obtain a light-boiling fraction and a bottom product containing crude acrylic acid; and C. esterifying the crude acrylic acid obtained in step B using one or more alkanols to produce an esterification mixture containing one or more acrylic acid esters, one or more acetic acid esters, one or more maleic acid esters and oligomeric and polymeric acrylic acid esters.
