Abstract: The present invention provides a process for preparing 1,6-hexanediol from a carboxylic acid mixture which comprises adipic acid, 6-hydroxycaproic acid and small amounts of 1,4-cyclohexanediols and is obtained as a by-product in the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone/cyclohexanol with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases and by water extraction of the reaction mixture, by esterification of the acids and hydrogenation, in which a) the mono- and dicarboxylic acids present in the aqueous dicarboxylic acid mixture are reacted with a low molecular weight alcohol to give the corresponding carboxylic esters, b) the resulting esterification mixture is freed of excess alcohol and low boilers in a first distillation stage, c) a separation of the bottom product is carried out in a second distillation stage into an ester fraction substantially free of 1,4-cyclohexanediols and a fraction comprising at least the majority of the 1,4-cyclohexanediols, d) the ester fraction substantially free of 1,4-cyclohexanediols is catalytically hydrogenated and e) 1,6-hexanediol is obtained in a purifying distillation stage from the hydrogenation effluent while removing an alcohol-low boiler mixture in a manner known per se, wherein alcohol is removed by a membrane system from the mixtures, obtained after the esterification in stage b) and/or after the hydrogenation in stage e), of alcohols and low boilers and recycled into the esterification.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for recycling a substantially liquid discharge that contains aldehydes and non-reacted olefins from a hydroformylation reactor in which C2-C20 olefins or olefin mixtures of various isomers of said olefins are hydroformylated at 50 to 150 DEG C and 2 to 30 bars with a phosphorated rhodium-catalyst homogeneously dissolved in the reaction medium. The process has the following steps: (a) the liquid and gaseous component-containing hydroformylation discharge, that besides the catalyst substantially contains the hydroformylation product, by-products with a higher boiling temperature than the hydroformylation product, non-reacted olefin, saturated hydrocarbons and non-reacted synthesis gas, is expanded in a flash vessel; (b) pressure and temperature drop during expansion until a liquid phase is produced that substantially contains the catalyst, by-products with a higher boiling point than the hydroformylation product and residual amounts of hydroformylation product and non-reacted olefin, as well as a gaseous phase that contains non-reacted olefin, saturated hydrocarbons and non-reacted synthesis gas; (c) a liquid stream is withdrawn from the thus obtained liquid phase and a gaseous stream is withdrawn from the thus obtained gaseous phase; (d) the liquid stream is heated up to a temperature higher than the temperature in the flash vessel; (e) the heated liquid stream flows as a liquid into the head of a column; (f) the gaseous stream withdrawn from the flash vessel flows into the lower part of said column, in the opposite direction to the liquid stream that flows into the head of said column; (g) a gaseous stream enriched with olefin and hydroformylation product is withdrawn from the column head and further processed; (h) a liquid stream that contains less hydroformylation product and olefin than the liquid stream produced at the column head is withdrawn from the column bottom; and (i) this liquid stream is totally or partially returned to the hydroformylation reactor.
