Abstract: The novel diphenyl methane cpds. have formula (I). (where R' is Et or Pr substd. by CN, Cl, OH, MeO, EtO, acetoxy, beta-cyanethoxy, N,N-dimethyl or N,N-diethylamino; R2 = R' or 1-4C alkyl, and R' and R2 are the same or different, R3 = H, Ml, Et, MeO or Cl). (I) can be converted by oxidn. into novel benzophenone derivs. useful as photosensitisers or components of photo-iniator systems. The benzophenone derivs. are less toxic than Michler's ketone whilst having similar photosensitising activity, are more sol. in many organic solvents and are more compatible with many photopolymerisable mixts.

The compounds of the formula I are particularly suitable for coloring paper pulps.

Abstract: Photopolymerisable binders contain an olefinically unsatd. monomer and opt. polymer components and a photosensitiser consisting of 4,4'-bis-morpholino-benzophenone (I). The binders pref. also contain a known photosensitiser, esp. benzophenone or a deriv. with low absorption in the 300-380 nm range. The monomers pref. contain >=2 C=C bonds, e.g. oli- and poly- (meth)acrylates, which may be mixed with 5-50 (5-30) wt.% monomers contg. 1 C=C bond. Used in printing inks, coatings, printing plates, etc. They are less toxic, more soluble in organic solvents and more compatible with monomers than is Michler's ketone, allowing highly-pigmented UV-drying printing inks to be made with much improved brilliance.
