Abstract: Adhesives comprise 60 to 90 parts ethylene, 0.5 to 20 parts of an ethylenic-unsat. carboxylic acid and 0.5 to 20 parts of an ester of an ethylenic-unsat. carboxylic acid, together with 0.05 to 7 parts based on total copolymer of an organic peroxide. The composition may also contain 2 to 30% of a resin and 0.1 to 20% of magnesium oxide and/or zinc oxide. The adhesives are suitable for metal sheet, as in tins, canisters, drums, etc. and give improved adhesion with better elasticity at temps. below O degree C.

[Also in Division C3] Sheet materials containing cellulose are coated with a sub-coat by applying aqueous dispersions of mixtures of (1) copolymers A of 80-98% by weight of vinylidene chloride and 2-20% by weight of copolymerisable monoethylenically unsaturated compounds and (2) polymers B of ethylenically unsaturated compounds having a glass transition temperature of +10 to -55C, the amount of polymers B being 10-65% of the weight of the sum of the polymers A and B in the mixture, drying the sub-coat and thereafter applying as top-coat aqueous dispersions of a copolymer of 80-98% by weight of vinylidene chloride and 2-20% by weight of a copolymerisable monoethylenically unsaturated compound and drying the top-coat. Compounds copolymerisable with the vinylidene chloride in copolymers A may be esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and monohydric aliphatic alcohols containing 1-8 carbon atoms in the alcohol radical, and vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl esters of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having 2-12 carbon atoms, such as vinyl acetate and propionate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid, the monoamides and N-substituted monoamides of said acids, esters and monoesters of these acids, and aliphatic monohydric and aliphatic monohydric alcohols containing 1-8 carbon atoms, maleic anhydride and itaconic anhydride. Polymers B may be copolymers containing 40-90% by weight of esters of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid with monohydric alcohols containing 2-8 carbon atoms and 10-60% of other conventional monoethylenically unsaturated compounds polymerisable by free radical mechanisms, such as methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride Copolymers of n-butyl acrylate and of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or esters of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids may be used. The proportions of monomers must be such as to provide the specified glass transition temperature. Various suitable copolymers are identified in the Examples. Emulsifiers may be added to the dispersions such as surface active salts of sulphonated ethenoxylated alkylphenols or fatty alcohols. Heat and light stabilizers, anti-foams,. thickeners and plasticizers may be added. Coating may be by means of doctor knives, rollers or shreading means, flooding means, houring or dipping. Drying may be with infrared rays or preheated air. The substrate may be paper or laminates of paper with metal foils such as aluminium foils.

Abstract: A mixture (A) of vinylidene chloride and other monomers giving a co-polymer of softening point -20 degrees C to 40 degrees C, is first polymerised to a conversion of at least 90%. A mixture of vinylidene chloride, with other monomers of desired, giving a co-polymer of softening point 60 degrees to 200 degrees C is then added and immediately polymerised. The ratio of (A) to (B) is from 1:2 to 10:1 and the composition is such that the co-polymer product contains at least 60% vinylidene chloride. The aqueous dispersions obtained can be for coating plastic films, paper, parchment, metallic foils, etc. giving coating with excellent flexibility, elasticity, resistance to ageing and heat-sealing properties. and with reduced tendency to blocking.

Abstract: 1292499 Adhesive coatings BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 5 March 1970 [6 March 1969] 10572/70 Heading B2E Pressure-sensitive adhesive coated articles have at least one adhesive coating containing a copolymer of (a) from 50 to 90% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic esters of primary and/or secondary alkanols of 4 to 12 carbon atoms, of which at least 25% are derived from alkanols having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, (b) from 10 to 40% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic esters of tertiary alcohols of 4 to 12 carbon' atoms and (c) from 3 to 12% by weight of polymerizable heterocyclic N-vinyl compounds and/or other olefin comonomers containing reactive groups. Suitable primary and secondary alkanols for the esters are nbutanol, s-butanol, n-hexanol, n-octanol, 2- ethylhexanol-1 alcohol, n-decanol and n-dodecanol. Suitable tertiary alkanols are t-butanol, 2-ethylhexanol-2 or 2-ethyl decyl alcohol. Suitable N-vinyl compounds are N-vinyl caprolactam, N-vinyl imidazole and N-vinyl 1 pyrrolidone. Other suitable comonomers are acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylomide, methacrylomide, N - methylacrylomide, N - methylol acrylomide, N - methalol methacrylomide, N - methoxy methacrylomide, N - n - butoxy methacrylomide, maleic acid, itaconic acid and fumaric acid and their amides, and crotonic acid and its amide. Other suitable monomers, containing hydroxyl groups are specified. The substrate may be sodium paper, metal foils, such as of aluminium, films of polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene and polyethylene terephthalate, foamed materials such as of rubber, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyurethane and polyether and woven and non-woven webs of fibrous material such as woven textile fabrics and non-woven fabrics of natural and/or synthetic fibres.
