Abstract: Process for the manufacture of alpha -naphthol by hydrolyzing alpha -naphthyl esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids in a distillation column by means of steam in counter-current at a particular temperature, and in a certain ratio, in the presence of naphtholsulfonic acids and/or sulfonic acids of naphthyl esters. The alpha -naphthol obtainable by the process of the invention is a valuable starting material for the manufacture of dyes, drugs and insecticides, e.g. alpha -naphthyl N-methylcarbamate.

Abstract: Prodn. of alpha-ketocarboxylic acid derivs. of formula R1COR2 (R1 is opt. 1-30C aryl or (cyclo)alkyl, R2 is carboxylic acid deriv. gp.) (I) comprises oxidn. of corresp. hydroxy cpds (II) with Cl2 or Br2 at 180 degrees C. The solvent is pref. a halogenated hydrocarbon, specif. chlorobenzene and reaction is opt. in presence of light and/or a radical former. Acid derivs. used are esters, nitriles amides or halides, esp. 1-10C alkyl esters. (I) are intermediates for plant-protection agents and also useful as photoinitiators. The method is esp. used for arylglyoxylic acid esters. Good yields are achieved (no significant replacement of OH by halogen) without the need for expensive or polluting oxidising agents.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a simplified process, which avoids organo-lithium intermediates, for the preparation of erythro- alpha -piperid-2-yl-2,8-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-quinolin-4-yl-methanol, wherein 2,8-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-quinoline-4-carboxylic acid or a salt thereof is reacted with a pyrid-2-yl-magnesium halide to give pyrid-2-yl-2,8-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-quinolin-4-yl ketone in the manner of a Grignard reaction, and this product is hydrogenated, in a conventional manner, to give erythro- alpha -piperid-2-yl-2,8-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-quinolin-4-yl-methanol.

Abstract: Wastes from chemical processes contg. halogens and/or hydrogen halides and elemental carbon and/or a heavy organic residue and opt. water are reacted with oxygen or an O2-contg. gas at 300-700 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst system comprising V2O5 and an oxygen-contg. cpd. of P(V) on an inorganic carrier (having a specific surface area of 250-600 m2/g). The halogens and/or the hydrogen halides are sepd. from the gaseous reaction prods. by condensation or absorption in water. CO2 is released to the atmos. Complete combustion of carbon is achieved. The economy of the process is good because the fuel consumption is less than in the known processes.
