Abstract: Expandable polystyrene contains up to 40 wt.% recycled polystyrene. It is obtd. by dissolving the recycled material in styrene monomer and polymerising this soln. in aq. suspension, with addn. of finely-divided polyethylene wax (I) and/or a mol.wt. regulator (II) during polymerisation. Pref. the material is treated with 0.05-1.0 wt.% (I) and/or 10-5000 ppm (II). (I) has a Mn of 2000-6000. (II) is dimerised alpha -methylstyrene.

Abstract: Gases containing CO and/or CO2 are purified by removing sulfur compounds and other impurities by catalytic reaction at elevated temperatures by a process in which the gases to be purified are passed directly through a catalyst charge containing a Cu/ZnO catalyst prepared by thermal decomposition of a mixed crystalline compound of zinc hydroxide carbonate, and the space velocity is set at 500-5,000 m3 (S.T.P.) per m3 of catalyst per hour. Preferably, the catalyst used is a Cu/ZnO catalyst which is prepared by thermal decomposition of a catalyst precursor of the general formula CuxZny(OH)6(CO3)2.

Abstract: A mixt of 2-30C hydrocarbons with steam is partially cracked in a first reaction zone over a Ni catalyst to give a prod stream also contg. unreacted hydrocarbon. After cooling this is further reacted in a second zone over a Ni catalyst in the presence of steam to give a mixt of CH4, carbon oxides, H2 and steam. The catalyst in the first zone is pref. used until 75% of the hydrocarbon remains unreacted. It may then be replaced and used as the second zone, while the partially used catalyst from the second zone is used as the first. The catalyst is a type with low temp. activity, esp. one produced from a precursor of formula Ni5MgAl2(OH)16.CO3.4H2O. The process is highly economic, since the first zone can be operated with low steam to hydrocarbon ratios and with high catalyst loadings. Life of the catalyst is extended.
