    Abstract: 1. Thermoplastic mouldingmaterials (I) comprise 20-79 pts. wt. polyphenylene ether (PPE), 1-20 pts. wt. A-B-A' block copolymer comprising two vinylaromatic blocks A, A' and a partly hydrogenated rubber block B (II), 0-70 pts.wt. of a polyvinylaromatic (III) and 0-40 pts.wt. usual additives; the novelty is that mol. wts. of A and A' differ by a factor of 2-20, shorter block (A) has mol.wt. 2000-4000 and A+A' constitute 35-50 wt.% of (II). 2. (I) are mfd. by mixing at 250-320 deg.C for 0.5-30 mins. Specifically, A+A' make up 35-40 wt.% of (II), mol. wts. of A and A' differ by a factor of 4-8 and A has mol.wt. 3000-3800; block B still contains 10-20 wt.% of the double bonds originally present.

    Abstract: A hydrogenated star-shaped polymer (I) has (a) a nucleus of a poly(polyalkenyl aromatic coupling agent) (II) and (b) a number of arms consisting of hydrogenated polymer chains comprising cone shaped copolymers of 4-12C conjugated dienes and 8-12 C monoalkenyl aromatics. The hydrogenated polymer chains comprise a multi-block copolymer with at least 2 blocks of the cone shaped copolymer of the diene and monoalkenyl aromatic. Also claimed is a process for the production of (I) by (i) solution polymerisation of a 4-12C conjugated diene and a monoalkenyl aromatic in the presence of an anionic polymerisation initiator to form a living cone shaped copolymer, (ii) reaction of the resulting product with a 10-20C polyalkenyl aromatic coupling agent (II) or a mixture of (II) with a 8-12C alkenyl aromatic to form a star shaped polymer and (iii) deactivation and hydrogenation of the resulting polymer.
