Abstract: A graft copolymer comprises 90-30 wt.% of a thermoplastic, predominantly linear polyurethane (e.g. derived from polycaprolactone and 4,4-diphenylmethanediisocyanate) as back-bone polymer, and 10-70 wt.% of polymers of monoethylenically unsatd, vinyl cpds (e.g styrene), chemically bonded, as side chains, to the backbone polymer. Prepn may be by graft copolymsn. with the aid of radical catalysts or high-energy radiation. It is used as highly compatible a adhesion adjuvants in the adhesive bonding of polymeric materials as components in polymer blends to improve impact-resistance; and in mfr. of laminates.

Abstract: Markable film is coated on >=1 side with a mixt. of finely divided mineral fillers and usual binder(s) for paper coating compsns., the coating contg. 10-95 wt. % mixt. of mineral fillers (I) with Mohs' hardness is not 5 and particle size 0.4-20 mu m and mineral fillers (II) with greater intrinsic surface area, pref. 70-250 m2/g and particle size 0.01-5 mu m, the (I)/(II) ratio being 80:20 to 35:65. It can be marked satisfactorily with lead pencils (is not >6H), Indian ink, writing ink, ball pen ink, etc. Most marks can be erased easily and ink does not run in erased areas. The film has good dimensional stability under fluctuating conditions of humidity and when wetted. Its opacity is 10-50%, so that it can be used for copying and blue-print prodn.

Abstract: Laminate consists of at least two bonded layers, the first layer contg. at least 30% wt. of a styrene polymer (I) with a good thermal stability, and the second layer contg. a styrene polymer other than polymer (I). Specif. the styrene polymer (I) consists of a copolymer of 95-50% wt. styrene and 5-50% wt. maleic anhydride, fumaric anhydride or itaconic anhydride, of 90-20% wt. styrene and 10-80% wt, alpha-methylstyrene, of 90-50% wt. styrene and 10-90% wt. methyl methacrylate of 90-50% wt. alpha-methylstyrene and 10-50% wt. acrylonitrile, or a terpolymer of styrene/alpha-methylstyrene/acrylonitrile, or styrene/methyl methacrylate/alpha-methylstyrene, or styrene/acrylonitrile/maleic anhydride, or styrene/methyl methacrylate/maleic anhydride. The laminates have a combination of lhigh thermal stability, and high rigidity, resistance to impacts, resistance to scratching and/or resistance to solvents, which cannot be obtained with the individual styrene polymers.

Abstract: The film is coated with a paper-coating material consisting of 100 parts pigment with 20 to 100 parts of a binder, in which the binder is a co-polymer of an acrylic or methacrylic acid ester, an unsaturated carboxylic acid and, opt. other vinyl monomers. The coating is suitable for application to any of the usual styrene polymers, esp. polystyrene or styrene -acrylonitrile co-polymer modified with rubber for improved impact-resistance. Adhesion of the coating to the film is good and ageing is better than that of polybutadiene coatings, with less yellowing and embrittlement.

The molding compositions may be used for the manufacture of foams by expanding the blowing agents at elevated temperatures.
