Abstract: Filaments and fibers based on polypropylene or copolymers thereof having a content of from 10 to 90% by weight of bitumen and a process for their manufacture, in which a mixture based on polypropylene or copolymers thereof and containing from 10 to 90% by weight of bitumen is melt-spun and drawn. The filaments and fibers produced in the manner of the invention are suitable for the production of woven and non-woven fabrics for insulating purposes and carpet underlays.

Abstract: Ternary polypropylene compsns. consist of (1) 60-95wt.% polypropylene with intrinsic viscosity measured in decalin at 130 degrees C of 1-9 and density 0.80-0.92, (2) 3-30% copolymer with (melt flow index) MFI (190 degrees C, 2.16 kp) of 0.0-120, opt. crosslinked up to 100% gel content, from (2.1) 50-90wt.% of ethylene and (2.2)50-10% (meth)acrylate ester of a 1-8C alkanol, and (3) 2-30% polyethylene with MFI 0.01-20 and density 0.93-0.97. The compsns. are processed on usual machines into films, profiles, sheets, hollow articles, vehicle body parts, etc. Addn. of (3) to known mixts. of (1) and (2) gives materials with good toughness at low temps. and stiffness, together with excellent flow properties in processing.

Examples are given in which granules of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer or ethylene/nbutyl acrylate copolymer are grafted with acrylic acid.

Abstract: Cellular materials are prepd. from mixts. of polyolefins and 10-95 wt.% styrene polymer by (a) mixing the polymer mixt. with a volatile blowing agent 0.5-10 wt.% (based on polymers) hydrogenated styrene-butadiene block copolymer or a polyolefin grafted with styrene, at a temp. above the softening point of the polymer mixt., and under a higher pressure than the vapour pressure of the blowing agent at this temp., and (b) extruding the mixt. into a lower pressure zone. Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of motor fuel tanks from polyethylene where a certain number of hydrogen atoms on its internal surface have been replaced by sulphonic acid salt groups, by treatment of the internal surface of polyethylene tanks first with sulphur trioxide and then with ammonia, characterised in that a) an excess of gaseous sulphur trioxide is introduced in turbulent flow into the interior of polyethylene tanks, and b) is allowed to act in the interior of the tanks until the desired degree of sulphonation has been reached, then c) the unconsumed sulphur trioxide is expelled from the interior of the tanks, then d) an excess of gaseous ammonia is introduced in turbulent flow into the interior of the tanks, and e) the ammonia is allowed to act in the interior of the tanks until the sulphonic acid groups have been neutralised, then f) the unconsumed ammonia is flushed out of the interior of the tanks, and finally g) the tanks are dried or allowed to dry internally. In this way, the sulphonic acid salt groups can be introduced in a simple manner and very uniformly on the internal surface.

Abstract: Polypropylene moulding compsn. is based on a mixt. of 90-99 (wt.)% polypropylene (I) which is 1% soluble on boiling in xylene at a (I)/xylene ratio of 5:95 and cooling to room temp., and 1-10% polypropylene (II), which is >99% soluble under these conditions, (I) and (II) having (approx.) the same intrinsic viscosity and mol. wt. distribution (GPC method) and absolute intrinsic viscosity value in the 1-10 range (in decalin at 130 degrees C). The novelty is that the compsn. also contains 3-30% hydrocarbon resin (II) with a softening point of 90-140 degrees C (ASTM E28/58T) and a bromine no. of under 5 g. Br/100g. (ASTM D1159), homogeneously blended with (I) and (II). The compsn. is useful for making undrawn, uni- or bi-axially oriented and laminated films and other articles, e.g. packaging tapes and injection mouldings. (III) improves the surface gloss.
