Abstract: New bis-imidazolinium salts are of formula (I): (where R is an (un)-satd. linear or branched 7-29, pref. 11-17C (hydroxy)-alkyl gp.; Z is an (un) satld. 2-12C alkylene gp., opt. with OH, CO, CN or Cl substit, or with -O-, -S- or -NR- in the chain, R being H or 1-4C alkyl; X is an anion, pref. Cl or Br). (I) are prepd. by heating approx. equimolar amts. of aminoethylhydroxyethylamine and 8-30 (12-18)C fatty acid(s) for 1-10 hrs. in the absence of air at 130-220 degrees C to an amide, then heating for 10-12 hrs. in the presence of a water eliminating agent under reduced pressure at 180-230 degrees C and reacting for 1-15 hrs. in the absence of air with ca. 0.5 mole (un)satd. 2-12 C alpha, omega-dichloro-or-dibromo-cpd., opt. with OH, CO, CN or Cl substit. or with -O-, -S- or -NR- in the chain, at 40-200 degrees C. 0.1-2.5% (I), w.r.t. the wt. of the fibres, is used as a retarder (to aid levelling) in the dyeing of polyacrylonitrile fibres or (mixed textiles with basic dyes. Lower concns. of (I) are required and the dye absorption phase is shorter.

Abstract: Water-insol. dyes and pigments are dispersed by means of PVA with a DP of 50-200 (sic) esp. 40-250 (as staked in the body of the specification), which has been esterified with 0.1-1 mole H2SO4/mole OH gp., and neutralised with (in)org. bases. The dispersant does not tend to reduce or oxidise dyes, esp. azo dyes, even at bath temps. of 130 degrees C. Dispersions of the dyes are stable, even at high temp. (50-80 degrees C) and have long storage life. Mixed fabrics, e.g. polyester/wool, ca be dyed without soiling. The dye prepn. esp. contains is not5 (10-20) wt% polymer, w.r.t. solids, and may be a dispersion, a paste or a solid. The sulphated polyvinyl alcohol is prepd. by is not 60% saponification of polyvinyl acetate, followed by treatment with chlorosulphonic acid or SO3 in a solvent, esp. DMF.

Used for softening polyacrylonitrile, polyester, polyamide, cellulose and regenerated cellulose textiles in various stages of mfr. to reduce surface friction and facilitate various processing operations and to improve the hand of the finished goods; and also for the treatment of textiles after laundering.

(I) are used in aq. soln. for treating textiles, giving an antistatic finish for polyacrylonitrile and a soft finish for regenerated celluose, cotton, polyester and nylon.
