Abstract: Carbonyl compounds R1-CHR2-CHR3-CR4O (I, R1=H or an organic radical; R2-R4=H or C1-C4-alkyl) are prepared by selective hydrogenation of the alpha , beta -unsaturated carbonyl compounds R1-CR2=CR3-CR4O (II) in the liquid phase by means of hydrogen in the presence of a palladium catalyst and of from 15 to 50% by weight, based on (II), of a tertiary amine.

Abstract: Prepn. of 2-methyl-2-hepten-6-one (I) comprises reacting 2-methyl-3-butene-2-ol (II) and an alkyl acetoacetate (III) in presence of an organic Al cpd. (IV) at 140-180 degrees C using a mole ratio of (II):(III) of 0.8-2, pref. 1-1.5:1. The concn. of (III) in the reaction mixt. is is not >15 wt. % for more than 2 hrs. pref. 1 hr. The concn. of (III) is esp. is not >5 wt. % and a specified (IV) is Al triphenoxide. Yields are >90% and formation of resins, acetone, isoprene and prenyl acetoacetate is minimised. Use of aromatic rather than aliphatic (IV) avoids formation of an (unspecified) impurity which is difficult to separate.
