Abstract: Stoving lacquers consist of (A) polymers contg. OH gps. (B) a cross-linking component and (C) additives e.g. solvents, pigments, flow agents and catalysts, in which (B) is a cpd. with at least 2 oxazolone-(5) gps. Cross-linking is by addn. only no volatile substances e.g. amines, HCHO or alcohols being released to pollute the atoms. The compsns. are suitable for u se in high solids systems or powder coating, and give satisfactory alkali and water resistance. Smooth glossy coatings are obtd. with excellent mechanical properties.

(B2) 5-80 mol.% of neopentylglycol hydroxypivalate. Addn. of >5 mol.% of component B2 gives improved adhesion to metals and does not reduce heat resistance of the prod.

Abstract: Powder coatings are prepd. by freezing a mixt. of pigment, polymer binder and solvent, removal of the solvent by sublimation under reduced press. and pulverisation of the residue. Used for application to metal substrates by sintering or electrostatic spraying processes. Powder coatings made by melt extrusion processes cannot be subsequently pigmented so colour range is limited. Removal of solvent from pigmented pastes by e.g. azeotrope distn. after H2O addn. can alter compsn. of final prod. Freeze drying avoids these difficulties.

Abstract: Binders with film-forming temps. of 40-240 degrees C are pptd. from a dil., electrically-conducting preparation, below the film-forming temp. by applying an electric potential. Prod. is removed, pref. continuously, from electrode as powder and is opt. dried or ground. Moderate temps. used avoid risk of premature cross-linking. Cleaning out mixing, grinding or sieving equipment is unnecessary. Additives usually needed in pptn. processes to give matl. in non-tacky, non-agglomerating form are eliminated. In contrast to spray-drying, prod. is obtd. in granular form suitable for paint use. Non-ionic additives, including pigments, can be co-pptd. if mixt. is suitably homogenised.
