Abstract: Fuels for spark-ignition engines contain minor amts. of copolymers, of mol. wt. 500-20,000, of maleic anhydride (MA) with (i) 2-40C olefins (A) and/or 3-10C cycloolefins (B), or (ii) 1-30C-alkyl vinyl ethers (C) and/or 3-10C-cycloalkyl vinyl ethers (D), or (iii) (C) and/or (D) and (A) and/or (B); in which the carboxyl gps. of the copolymers are wholly or partly reacted with alkali (ne earth) to form the corresp. salts, and the remaining carboxyl gps. are reacted with alcohols and/or amines with up to 50C to form the corresp. esters, amides or ammonium salts. The copolymers pref. contain at least 3 wt. % alkali or alkaline earth, esp. K. The fuel pref. contains 10-2,000 ppm of the alkali (ne earth) metal salts of the copolymers.
