Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pale blue gloss pigment having high perspiration resistance useful as a coating material especially a coloring coating material, etc., of a lacquer for an automobile by reacting a silicate platelet coated with reduced titania with a specific silane. SOLUTION: This pale blue gloss pigment is produced by using a silicate platelet coated with reduced titania as a base and reacting the silicate platelet with a silane of the formula Ra SiXb [R is a 1-10C alkyl substituted by glycidoxy, amino, etc., at μ-position; X is a 1-4C alkoxy; (a) is 1 or 2; (b) is 2 or 3 with the proviso that (a)+(b)=4] (preferably, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, etc.) by heating in a reductive atmosphere. The reaction is preferably per-formed by fluidizing the reduced platelets in a fluidizing reaction vessel by nitrogen, heating to 150-300 deg.C and further introducing the gasified silane and water vapor to the vessel. Moreover, muscovite flakes obtained by wet milling is preferably used as the silicate platelet. The reduction of the silicate platelet coated by the titania is preferably performed by ammonia gas.

Abstract: 14 Humidity-resistant bluish luster pigments Humidity-resistant bluish luster pigments based on titania-coated silicatic platelets heated in a reducing atmosphere are obtainable by reaction of the reduced platelets with a silane of the general formula I RaSiXb where: I R is a C1-C10-alkyl radical with substituted in the .omega.-position by a glycidoxy group, by an amino group, by a hydroxyl group or by a monoalkylamino group or an alkoxy radical whose alkyl chains may each contain up to 10 carbon atoms and may be interrupted by from 1 to 5 ether oxygen atoms or imino groups, the radicals R for a > 1 being identical or different; X is C1-C4-alkoxy; a is 1 or 2; and b is 2 or 3, subject to the proviso that a + b = 4.
