Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pale blue gloss pigment having high perspiration resistance useful as a coating material especially a coloring coating material, etc., of a lacquer for an automobile by reacting a silicate platelet coated with reduced titania with a specific silane. SOLUTION: This pale blue gloss pigment is produced by using a silicate platelet coated with reduced titania as a base and reacting the silicate platelet with a silane of the formula Ra SiXb [R is a 1-10C alkyl substituted by glycidoxy, amino, etc., at μ-position; X is a 1-4C alkoxy; (a) is 1 or 2; (b) is 2 or 3 with the proviso that (a)+(b)=4] (preferably, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, etc.) by heating in a reductive atmosphere. The reaction is preferably per-formed by fluidizing the reduced platelets in a fluidizing reaction vessel by nitrogen, heating to 150-300 deg.C and further introducing the gasified silane and water vapor to the vessel. Moreover, muscovite flakes obtained by wet milling is preferably used as the silicate platelet. The reduction of the silicate platelet coated by the titania is preferably performed by ammonia gas.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymeric ultraviolet absorber which exhibits a high water resistance, a low permeation into human skin, and a low residual monomer content and can be stably mixed and processed with other ingredients of cosmetic preparations by specifying the structures and contents of monomer units of the absorber. SOLUTION: The structural formulas of monomer units, a to d, are represented by formula I [wherein R and R are each H or a 1-8C alkyl; R is, e.g. a group of formula II; R is -(CO)n -R ; R is a 1-28C alkyl; n is 0 or 1; R is a 1-22C alkyl; and R is H or methyl]. The arrangement of monomer units is not limited, and the sum of a to d is 100; a is 5-95; b is 0-70; c is 5-95; and d is 0-70. The polymer is obtd. by the free radical polymn. of monomers for forming units a to d under normal conditions. The monomers are emulsified in water and copolymerized at 30-160 deg.C in the presence of a water-soluble initiator (e.g. azobisisobutyronitrile). The resultant polymer has a mol.wt. of 2,000-50,000 g/mol.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a medicine for cosmetic which is excellent in water resistance, processability, miscibility with other components and stability and shows low skin permeability and low toxicity by formulating a specific polymer bearing a UV-light absorbent organic group thereto. SOLUTION: This medicine contains a polymer of formula I (R and R' are each H, an alkali metal, an ammonium and an alkyl; X is a direct linkage and an oxoalkylene bearing an alkylene or 0; Y is a UV-light absorbent organic group; (n) is 2-800). Among compounds of formula I, a compound in which R' is an 8-20C alkyl and a compound in which Y is a group absorbing a light of wavelength of 200-400nm are preferable. As the Y, e.g. groups of formula II and formula III are illustrated. The polymer of formula I is obtained by polymerizing maleic anhydride with a monomer of formula IV.

Abstract: Method of modifying cleaned or chemically pre-treated metal surfaces with aq. solns. of organic polymers contg. amino gps. In an example, a sample of Mn-modified, low Zn content, phosphatised steel that had been cleaned with water was immersed for 60s in a 0.1 wt.% aq. polyvinylamine soln. at 50 deg.C, then after drying in air the sample was immersed for 5s in deionised water and then after drying in air again the sample was cathodically electro-plated in a bath according to the comparative example in German patent application DE4208056-A2. The sample was plated at 320-380 V to give a 23 micron thick coating, and then fired for 25 mins. at 165 deg.C. A 0.1 mm wide incision was made in the lacquered sample, extending down to the metal surface and the sample was sprayed for 15 days with aq. NaCl soln. (5 wt.%) at 40 deg.C (salt water spray test), whilst another sample was immersed for 10 days in an aq. NaCl soln. (5 wt.%) warmed to 55 deg.C (salt water soak test). No rust was observed for the soak test, whilst only a slight amt. of rust was observed for the spray test.

Abstract: A process for producing pigment particles of defined shape and size is characterised in that a flat structure with holes of defined shape and size is treated with a polymerisable substance or mixtures of substances in such a way that the holes are filled, any solvents are removed, the substance or mixture of substances is polymerised and the thus formed pigment particles are removed from the holes. The shape and size of the thus produced pigments may be easily varied by selecting appropriate substrate parameters. They are suitable for the known uses of such substances, in particular in lacquers, paints and printing inks.

Abstract: The invention relates to disulphides of the general formula X -(CH2)n-S-S-(CH2)n-X in which X and X are identical to one another and represent -Br, -N-phthalimide, -NH2, -OOC-(CH2)3-COOH, -O-SO2-CH3, -NH-(CH2)2- NH2, -SO3H or -SO3 M where M = an alkali metal ion, and n = 11 to 25, or X represents -OH and X represents -Br or X and X represent -COO-CH2-CH3 and n = 10 to 25, and to a process for their preparation. These disulphides are suitable for the preparation of monomolecular layers on noble metal supports and for the building up of multimolecular layers.
