    Abstract: This is a process for manufacturing composite materials from a layer of an expanded polystyrene and a layer of a cured UP resin. A layer of a thickened, light-curable, fibre-reinforced and/or filled UP resin is applied to the expanded polystyrene layer and pressed. The UP resin is then cured by irradiation with light at a wavelength of 300 to 450 nm, in which process the internal temperature of the UP resin layer may not exceed 80 DEG C. The composite materials can be used for manufacturing floating bodies and for insulating cold stores and transport containers.

    Abstract: A process for the production of moldings from unsaturated polyester resins wherein a mixture is first prepared from 1. an unsaturated polyester, 2. a copolymerizable vinyl compound, 3. an inhibitor, 4. a photoinitiator, 5. a thickener, preferably MgO, 6. a pulverulent auxiliary which transmits ultraviolet light and/or 7. a fibrous reinforcing material and 8. further conventional additives. This mixture is thickened, where appropriate after coating onto a sheet-like carrier, to form a semi-finished product, which is then finally shaped, and cured by UV irradiation after which it may or may not be heat-treated.

    Abstract: Light curing unsatd. polyester resin compsns. are made comprising (a) an unsatd. polyester resin, (b) a copolymerisable monomer (c) an inhibitor and (d) a UV sensitizer of formula R1R2-PO-CO-R3 (I) in which R1 and R2 (same or different) are 1-6C alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, aryl, halogen, alkyl- or alkoxy substd. aryl, or S- or N- contg. 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic gp.; or R2 may also be 1-6C alkoxy, aryloxy or arylalkoxy; or R1 and R2 together may form a ring; R3 is a 2-18C alkyl, 3-10C cycloaliphatic gp., phenyl, naphthyl, S-, O- or N-contg. 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic gp., which may opt. carry further substituents, or a gp. -X-CO-POR1R2, in which X is phenylene or a 2-6C (cyclo)aliphatic divalent gp. R1, R2 and R3 may be olefinically unsatd. The compsn. may als contain (d) paraffins, thermally decomposing initiators, fillers, reinforcing agents, lubricants, inert solvents, low shrink additives, etc. The acylphosphineoxide sensitizers give rapid curing of the compsn. on exposure to UV with less discolouration (yellowing) than with prior art UV sensitizers. The compsns. can be used for moulding, impregnation, coating etc.
