    Abstract: Light curing unsatd. polyester resin compsns. are made comprising (a) an unsatd. polyester resin, (b) a copolymerisable monomer (c) an inhibitor and (d) a UV sensitizer of formula R1R2-PO-CO-R3 (I) in which R1 and R2 (same or different) are 1-6C alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, aryl, halogen, alkyl- or alkoxy substd. aryl, or S- or N- contg. 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic gp.; or R2 may also be 1-6C alkoxy, aryloxy or arylalkoxy; or R1 and R2 together may form a ring; R3 is a 2-18C alkyl, 3-10C cycloaliphatic gp., phenyl, naphthyl, S-, O- or N-contg. 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic gp., which may opt. carry further substituents, or a gp. -X-CO-POR1R2, in which X is phenylene or a 2-6C (cyclo)aliphatic divalent gp. R1, R2 and R3 may be olefinically unsatd. The compsn. may als contain (d) paraffins, thermally decomposing initiators, fillers, reinforcing agents, lubricants, inert solvents, low shrink additives, etc. The acylphosphineoxide sensitizers give rapid curing of the compsn. on exposure to UV with less discolouration (yellowing) than with prior art UV sensitizers. The compsns. can be used for moulding, impregnation, coating etc.

    Abstract: Acylphosphine oxide compounds of the general formula where R1 is alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, aryl which is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, alkyl or alkoxy, or an S-containing or N-containing five-membered or six-membered heterocyclic radical, R2 has one of the meanings of R1 (but R1 and R2 may be identical or different) or is alkoxy, aryloxy or aralkoxy, or R1 and R2 together form a ring and R3 is an at least disubstituted phenyl, pyridyl, furyl or thienyl radical which carries, at least at the two carbon atoms adjacent to the linkage point of the carbonyl group, the substituents A and B, which may be identical or different, and each of which is alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 5 to 7 carbon atoms, phenyl or halogen, or R3 is alpha -naphthyl substituted by A and B at least in the 2- and 8-positions or is beta -naphthyl substituted by A and B at least in the 1- and 3-positions, a process for the preparation of these acylphosphine oxide compounds from acid halides of the general formula where X is chlorine or bromine, and a phosphine of the general formula and the use of these acylphosphine oxide compounds as photoinitiators in photopolymerizable surface coatings, finishes and printing inks.
