    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain α-tocopherol (vitamin E) important as an antioxidant in the field of nutrition without causing grave waste-water problem from trimethylhydroquinone, etc., by recycling a zinc halide condensation catalyst. SOLUTION: The subject compound is produced by reacting 2,3,5- trimethylhydroquinone with phytol or isophytol in the presence of zinc chloride or zinc bromide and a proton donor such as a mineral acid or toluensulfonic acid. The reaction is carried out in a nonpolar solvent scarcely miscible with water and zinc chloride, etc., are introduced into the reaction system as a mixture of 1mol of the zinc chloride, etc., and 1-4mol of water, separated after the completion of reaction and recycled to the reaction system optionally after concentrating or replenishing to a concentration of about 60-90wt.%.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of .beta.-carotene micellar solutions, wherein a non-ionic emulsifier which is suitable for the preparation of micellar solutions is heated at from 160 to 180.degree.C and a total of from 20 to 30% by weight, based on the emulsifier, of .beta.-carotene is introduced in the presence of a conventional antioxidant, the hot homogeneous mixture is cooled rapidly to below 100.degree.C by adding water, and the formulation is brought to the desired concentration of from 3 to 6% by weight by adding further water, and the .beta.-carotene micellar solutions obtained by this process. The non-ionic emulsifiers used in this process have an HLB value of from 12 to 16, and are in particular oxyethylated triglycerides of fatty acids of 12 to 18 carbon atoms containing 20 - 60 oxyethylene units. Parenteral administration of the stable .beta.-carotene micellar solutions according to the invention to cattle relieves the disturbed estrus cycle and impaired fertility caused by .beta.-carotene deficiency.

    Abstract: PREPARATION OF TOCOPHERYL ACETATE AND TOCOPHERYL PROPIONATE Tocopheryl acetate or tocopheryl propionate is prepared by a process in which trimethylhydroquinone is reacted with phytol or isophytol in the presence of a proton donor and zinc chloride and of a liquid hydrocarbon as the solvent, the tocopherol obtained is then esterified, and the esterification mixture is worked up in a conventional manner to give tocopheryl acetate or tocopheryl propionate, wherein the mixture obtained in the reaction of trimethylhydroquinone with phytol or isophytol is cooled to room temperature, acetic anhydride or propionic anhydride is added and the resulting mixture is heated to 20-60.degree.C or allowed to warm up to this temperature.

    Abstract: Preparation of alpha -tocopherol or alpha -tocopheryl acetate comprises reaction of 2,3,5-trimethylhydroquinone (TMH) with phytol or isophytol (IP) in the presence of zinc chloride and a proton donor in a water immiscible, or poorly water miscible, nonpolar solvent; and the product is optionally esterified with acetic anhydride. Either (1) the ZnCl2 is used in a mixture with 1-4 moles water per mole ZnCl2; or (2) at the end of reaction, the zinc chloride is separated, preferably by extraction with water or a water/low-boiling solvent mixture; and the zinc chloride solution (optionally concentrated to 60-90 wt.%), is partly or completely returned (optionally as a hot solution or pumpable mash) to the reaction mixture under conditions such that no more than 4 (preferably no more than 3) moles water per mole zinc chloride are available for subsequent reaction.
