Abstract: A method of joining the edges of flexographic printing plates on printing cylinders, which includes the following steps: (i) fixing the printing plates to make-ready cylinders by means of a first double-sided self-adhesive film having the same area as the printing plate, (ii) cutting the printing plates to size so that they fit the printing cylinders, (iii) removing the cut printing plates from the make-ready cylinders and from the first self-adhesive films, (iv) fixing the cut printing plates by means of a second double-sided self-adhesive film, which has the same area as the printing plates and from 1.6 to 2.6 times the thickness of the first self-adhesive films, so that defined gaps result between the edges of the fixed printing plates, (v) filling the gaps between the edges to be joined, with a liquid photopolymerizable mixture of binders, photopolymerizable monomers and photopolymer, ization initiators and (vi) partially polymerizing the mixture under a transparent film cover by exposure to UV light until the elongation at break in the composite consisting of the solid gap closing compound and the printing plate material fulfils the condition RS

Abstract: A process is claimed for fixing a flexographic printing plate to a printing roll, where the plate comprises (a) a base layer of elastomeric material, (b) an intermediate layer which is insoluble in and impermeable to developer and printing ink solvents, and (c) a relief layer formed by photo-crosslinking a mixt of 50-99 wt.% of an elastomer and 1-50 wt.% of one or more photopolymerisable olefinically unsatd. monomers. The process comprises coating the bottom of the base layer with a layer of adhesive which is transparent to actinic radiation and has an adhesive force of 1-6 N/25mm when fixed to the printing roll.

Abstract: In bonding the cut edges of photopolymerisable flexoprinting plates which have relief layers and dimensionally stable support films, onto a printing cylinder, by (a) filling the nip between the edges with a photo-polymerisable mixt. of binder, compatible photopolymerisable monomers and initiators for the photopolymerisation, and (b) polymerising the mixt. under a fixed, transparent coating, by irradiation with UV light, the novelty is that (a1) before stage (a) the plates are fixed by a double-sided adhesive film (1) of the same surface as the plates, onto adjusting cylinders and are cut to suit the printing cylinder, after which they are removed from the adjusting cylinder and the film (1), and are fixed onto the printing cylinders by a double-sided adhesive film (2) of the same surface as the printing plates and thickness 1.6-2.6 x that of film (1), and (b1) in stage (b) the mixt. is only partially polymerised until the relation: Rs is less than R(s/f) which is less than Rf is satisfied. R8 = Elongation at break of the partially polymerised compsn. filling the nip; R(s/f) = elongation at break in the interface between the compsn. filling the nip and the material of the printing plate: Rf = elongation at break of the material of the printing plate.

Abstract: In the prodn. of matrices for embossing by placing a curable compsn. in the patric mould formed with the matrix and curing the compsn., a liquid photopolymerisable material (I) is poured into a mould formed from a matrix and edge suited to the wall thickness of the patrix, (I) hardening to a material with a hardness of 50 Shore A to 80 Shore D, pref. 70 Shore A to 50 Shore D on photopolymsn. with full-tone exposure, with shrinkage of is not >5, pref. 2% (w.r.t. a 10 cm x 10 cm sample ; and (I) is photopolymesd. slowly by full-tone exposure with actinic light and then released from the mould. The patrix pref. is tempered in the mould at 40-100 degrees C, opt. under pressure, after photopolyms. The matrices can be produced away from the printing machine, e.g. in the repro division of the printing works. Installation in the machine, together with the matrices, can be carried out quickly (in a few min.) and without problems. In addn., the properties of the material ensure good embossing quality and high editions at low wastage. The matrices ae re-usable.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of relief formes. After exposing layers which can be crosslinked by photopolymerisation to actinic light through an image, the uncrosslinked portions of the layers are washed out with hydrocarbon solvents or mixtures of hydrocarbon solvents and alcohols, certain hydrogenated petroleum fractions being used as hydrocarbon solvents. The process is suitable, in particular, for the production of flexographic printing formes.
