Abstract:
The invention relates to a process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of a polymer P, which comprises the emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate, an acrylate monomer, which is a C1-C10 alkyl acrylate or a C1-C10 methacrylate, an a,ß-ethlyenically unsaturated C3-C8 carboxylic acid, glycidyl methacrylate or glycidyl acrylate, optionally an ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid and optionally an ethylenically unsaturated other monomer. Furthermore, the aqueous polymer dispersion obtainable from this process and a powder form thereof are disclosed. They are useful for a paper coating slip containing one of the aforementioned forms. A paper or a cardboard, which is coated with the paper coating slip, shows surface strength, which is expressed by a good dry pick resistance, a good wet pick resistance or good offset test results. The aqueous polymer dispersion or the powder form thereof is furthermore useful as a binder.

Paper coating compositions comprise inorganic pigments and an aqueous polymeric dispersion comprising dispersed polymeric particles. The polymers are obtainable by polymerization of a first monomer that is liquid at room temperature, has a boiling point of at least 50°C and a glass transition temperature of at least 20°C as homopolymer, and a second monomer that is gaseous at room temperature, has a boiling point of below 0°C and a glass transition temperature of below -30°C as homopolymer. The dispersed polymeric particles have an average size of below 150 nm and a glass transition temperature in the range from -10 to +30°C.

Un proceso para preparar una dispersión acuosa de un polímero P, que comprende las etapas de: - proporcionar los monómeros (a) acetato de vinilo, (b) al menos un monómero de acrilato, que es un acrilato de alquilo C1-C10 o un metacrilato de alquilo de C1-C10, (c) al menos un ácido carboxílico de C3-C6 α,β-etilénicamente insaturado, (d) metacrilato de glicidilo o acrilato de glicidilo, (e) al menos un ácido sulfónico etilénicamente insaturado, y (f) opcionalmente, al menos un otro monómero etilénicamente insaturado, que es diferente de los monómeros (a), (c), (d) o (e), - emulsionar los monómeros en un medio acuoso, y - polimerizar los monómeros en presencia de un iniciador de radicales libres, en donde - el contenido de acetato de vinilo es de 70 a 94,7 partes en peso de los monómeros, - el contenido del al menos un monómero de acrilato es de 5 a 25 partes en peso de los monómeros, - el contenido del al menos un ácido carboxílico de C3-C6 α,β-etilénicamente insaturado es de 0,1 a 10 partes en peso de los monómeros, - el contenido de metacrilato de glicidilo o acrilato de glicidilo es de 0,1 a 10 partes en peso de los monómeros, - el contenido de al menos un ácido sulfónico etilénicamente insaturado es de 0,1 a 5 partes en peso de los monómeros, - el contenido opcional del al menos otro monómero etilénicamente insaturado es de 0,1 a 15 partes en peso de los monómeros, y la suma total de las partes en peso de los monómeros (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) y (f) es 100.
