    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To arbitrate access to a plurality of buses by a plurality of arbiters. SOLUTION: A computer system is provided with a freely attachable and detachable lap-top part and an extension base connected through a PCI (peripheral component interface bus) 112a. They are respectively provided with different PCI arbiter circuits 204 so as to arbitrate requests from a PCI bus master and an ISA (industry standard architecture) bus master to the PCI bus. The lap-top part is provided with a top level arbiter and judges whether or not a PCI arbiter inside the lap-top or the extension base is provided with the access to the PCI bus. Before executing a cycle, either one of the PCI arbiters receives permission from the top level arbiter, and while the lap-top part is docked, the top level arbiter performs selection between the PCI arbiters in a time division multiplexmanner. When the extension base and the lap-top part are not docked, the top level arbiter permits the bus access to the PCI arbiter of the lap-top.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To performs the absolute and subtractive decoding of an address on the computer bus according to a configuration. SOLUTION: An extension base for docking a portable part and a corresponding part together is included in a bridge circuit which decodes an address adaptively according to the docking state, and the bridge circuit passes a cycle from a peripheral component interconnect) bus 200 to an industrial standard architecture(ISA) bus 202. The bridge circuit includes a configuration register 224 which controls an internal device and decoding. Bus cycles specified for internal devices and external devices connected to respective ISA buses of the bridge circuit are absolutely decoded. A cycle which is neither decoded nor requested absolutely is subtractively decoded by one bridge circuit according to the docking status.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain hot docking/undocking in a portable computer and a docking station. SOLUTION: A long pin 147a, a middle pin 147b and a short pin 147c are provided in an extension connector 146 and used for reporting a connection state by length. The portable computer L is connected to an extension base E with a quick switch 113. When the switch is closed after a docking event, the docking station part of a PCI bus 112 is connected to a portable computer part. When the switch is opened, the PCT bus is isolated in terms of a function. The switch is controlled by a signal generated by a microcontroller 170a in the portable computer.

    Abstract: A method for hot docking and hot undocking a portable computer and a docking station. The portable computer and docking station are physically coupled via a shared PCI bus and an expansion connector. Varying length pins in the expansion connector generate docking and undocking handshaking signals used by microcontrollers in the portable computer and docking station. The portable computer and docking station are functionally connected via low on-resistance switches located in the portable computer. Following a docking event, closure of the switches connects the portion of the shared PCI bus in the docking station with the PCI bus in the portable computer. When the switches are open, the PCI busses are functionally isolated. Both the portable computer and the docking station also include a local arbiter for arbitrating and granting bus control requests from devices coupled to the shared PCI bus. These local arbiters may be placed into an idled state by either the operating system (through system BIOS) or by the microcontrollers. The arbiters are idled during docking and undocking events in order to inhibit bus cycles on the PCI bus, thereby preventing cycles from being lost. Following completion of a hot docking or undocking event, Plug-and-Play system reconfiguration is carried out so that all system resources may be recognized and properly utilized by the operating system.
