Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form substantially flat plane type optical circuits by treating a glass body to overcome troubles, such as distortion curling. SOLUTION: A substantially flat plane type silica substrate is formed and plural layers of oxide compds. are formed on this substrate. These oxide layers are sintered to form glassy optical waveguide layers on the silica substrate. The structural body formed in such a manner is heated to a high temp. for the time sufficient for flattening the structural body and the optical circuits are formed in the glassy layer by the conventional photolithography and etching. The surface formed in such a manner is clad with a glass layer covering the surface having the refractive index substantially equal to the refractive index of the substrate.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for drawing glass objects from glass feedstock, wherein a dimension of the glass object is measured on-line and controlled by a control structure which compensates for the deadtime between a change to the drawing speed and the measurement of the effect of that change to the measured dimension. The model which compensates for the deadtime is preferably nonlinear, and the control gains and model parameters are preferably continuously calculated during the drawing process. The invention is particularly applicable to drawing optical waveguide cane from optical waveguide preforms.

Abstract: A method of molding precision glass optical elements or lenses is disclosed. Precision molded glass molds are first provided which define a glass mold cavity having a predetermined desired size, shape and volume corresponding to the glass optical element. To facilitate formation of the glass optical elements, shaped and polished preforms are formed. An apparatus for molding glass optical elements by means of at least one molded glass mold is disclosed. The optical element, which may be a lens and which may be formed of glass, is molded within an apparatus that comprises a pair of molds of which at least one is a molded glass mold, a contraining means and a ring disposed intermediate the molds. The interior diameter of the ring and the mold surfaces of the molds comprise the optical element molding cavity.

Abstract: A method for forming a substantially flat planar lightwave optical circuit which has a substantially flat planar silica substrate and a sintered glassy lightguiding layer over the silica substrate. The structure is given a post treatment at an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to flatten said structure and compensate for distortion. Alternatively, the silica substrate may be heated and presagged to a predetermined degree to compensate for distortion or warpage which will occur in later processing.

Abstract: A strengthened glass or glass-ceramic sheet or article as well as processes and systems for making the strengthened glass or glass-ceramic sheet or article is provided. The process comprises cooling the glass sheet by non-contact thermal conduction for sufficiently long to fix a surface compression and central tension of the sheet. The process results in thermally strengthened glass sheets.
