    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymerization initiator which is able to control a molecular weight and its distribution by comprising at least one N-substituted compound selected from an N-substituted nitroso compound or a dimer thereof and an N-substituted nitron compound, and a radical polymerization initiator. SOLUTION: The N-substituted nitroso compound is represented by formula I, and the N-substituted nitron compound is represented by formula II. A preferred polymerization initiator is one wherein the N-substituted compound is selected from a 2-alkyl-2-nitrosopropane or its dimer and an N-branched alkyl-α- phenylnitron. It is preferred that the ratio between the N-substituted compound and the radical polymerization initiator is such that the former/the latter = 0.1/1 to 100/1 (molar ratio), and that the polymerization initiator system is used in an amount of 0.01 to 20 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of a vinyl monomer. When using this polymerization initiator system, the vinyl monomer can be polymerized in a living radical way to accurately control the molecular weight and the distribution of the molecular weight.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber-containing styrene resin wherein rubber particles dispersed in a styrene resin is controlled with respect to the morphology and particle thereof. SOLUTION: The rubber-containing styrene resin has particles of a rubber component dispersed in a matrix constituted of a styrene resin wherein a graft ratio of a styrene monomer to the rubber component is 1 or over, an average particle size of the dispersed rubber component ranges from 0.1 to 3 μm and a requirement for the following equation (1) is satisfied Mn=aT+b (1) (wherein Mn is a number average molecular weight of the matrix resin, T is a conversion of the styrene monomer, a is a constant larger than 0 and b is a constant not smaller than 0). The rubber component may be made of a butadiene rubber or the like. The particle size distribution of the dispersed rubber component may, for example, be in a two-peak form. Such a styrene resin can be prepared by polymerizing at least a styrene monomer in the presence of the rubber component at a graft ratio of 1 or over under conditions where the relation between the conversion Y of the styerene monomer and the number average molecular weight Mn of the polymer can be approximately expressed by a simple equation.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a vinyl polymer having a high molecular weight and a controlled molecular weight distribution while keeping the rate of polymerization high by adding a substituted hydroxylamine to the system of radical polymerization of a vinyl monomer. SOLUTION: The substituted hydroxylamines added are represented by formula I (wherein R1 and R2 are each H, a 1C or higher (substituted) aliphatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic hydrocarbon group) or/and formula II (wherein R3 and R4 are each 1C or higher substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon group). In each or R1 and R2 , the aliphatic hydrocarbon group is exemplified by metal, ethyl, isopropyl or t-butyl, and the aromatic hydrocarbon group is exemplified by phenyl or benzyl. In formula II, -R3 -R4 - is a divalent (substituted) aliphatic hydrocarbon group corresponding to formula I, such as -CH2 CH2 - or -CH2 CH2 CH2 CH2 -. In the radical polymerization, the initiator is used in a ratio of the substances of formulas I and II to the initiator of 0.01/1 to 100/1 by mole.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject resin which has excellent flowability (moldability) and gives a molding excellent in impact resistance by radically polymerizing a styrene monomer or a styrene monomer with a monomer copolymerizable therewith in the presence of a rubbery polymer and a specified substituted hydroxylamine. SOLUTION: A styrene monomer (e.g. styrene) or a styrene monomer and a monomer (e.g. acrylonitrile) copolymerizable therewith are radically polymerized in the presence of a rubbery polymer, desirably, polybutadiene and substituted hydroxylamines represented by formulae I and/or II. In the formulae, R3 and R4 are each a 1C or higher aliphatic hydrocarbon group; and R1 and R2 are each R3 or an aromatic hydrocarbon group. Desirably, the monomer or the monomers are polymerized in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, and more desirably, the monomer or the monomers are polymerized under conditions in which the molar ratio of, radical polymerization initiator/ styrene monomer is 0.001/100 to 10/100.
