Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a waterborne adhesive, capable of manifesting the adhesive strength in a short period and excellent in initial adhesion. SOLUTION: This waterborne adhesive having high initial adhesion is obtained by combining an aqueous polymeric emulsion such as a vinyl acetate- based polymer emulsion with a hydrophobized water-soluble hydroxyethyl cellulose(HEC) and, as necessary, a surfactant such as a nonionic surfactant or an anionic surfactant. The hydrophobized HEC includes the one containing a 4-22C alkyl group or a 6-10C aryl-1 to 4C alkyl group (especially a 12-22C alkyl group) introduced as a hydrophobic group thereinto. The amounts of the respective components are about 0.1-10 pts.wt. hydrophobized HEC and about 0.01-5 pts.wt. surfactant respectively based on 100 pts.wt. resin component in the aqueous polymeric emulsion.

SOLUTION: A water-based adhesive having high initial tack is obtained by using an aqueous emulsion obtained by emulsion-polymerizing vinyl acetate with at least one monomer selected among (meth)acrylic acid, glycidyl (meth) acrylate, (meth)acrylamide, N-methylol(meth)acrylamide, fumaric acid, its ester, maleic acid, its ester and a vinyl ester of a tert. carboxylic acid. The emulsifier used is exemplified by polyvinyl alcohol.

SOLUTION: This adhesive is obtained by adding at least one member selected from among water-soluble polyvalent-metal compounds [e.g. organic acid salts (e.g. calcium acetate), inorganic acid salts (e.g. iron sulfate and potassium aluminum sulfate) and halides (e.g. calcium chloride)] to an aqueous emulsion containing a carboxylic polymer. The carboxylic polymer may be in the form of emulsified polymer particles or a protective colloid or may be a water-soluble polymer added to an emulsion. The amount of the polyvalent-metal compound used is about 0.001-25 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. carboxylic polymer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber-containing styrene resin wherein rubber particles dispersed in a styrene resin is controlled with respect to the morphology and particle thereof. SOLUTION: The rubber-containing styrene resin has particles of a rubber component dispersed in a matrix constituted of a styrene resin wherein a graft ratio of a styrene monomer to the rubber component is 1 or over, an average particle size of the dispersed rubber component ranges from 0.1 to 3 μm and a requirement for the following equation (1) is satisfied Mn=aT+b (1) (wherein Mn is a number average molecular weight of the matrix resin, T is a conversion of the styrene monomer, a is a constant larger than 0 and b is a constant not smaller than 0). The rubber component may be made of a butadiene rubber or the like. The particle size distribution of the dispersed rubber component may, for example, be in a two-peak form. Such a styrene resin can be prepared by polymerizing at least a styrene monomer in the presence of the rubber component at a graft ratio of 1 or over under conditions where the relation between the conversion Y of the styerene monomer and the number average molecular weight Mn of the polymer can be approximately expressed by a simple equation.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a rubber-modified styrenic resin having a high impact resistance. SOLUTION: The preparation process uses a continuous reaction apparatus which is successively equipped with three complete-mixing type reactors and one tower type reactor. The process comprises a step wherein the whole amount of styrenic monomers used for preparing a rubber-modified styrenic monomer is divided into three batches at a desired ratio, and then the first batch of styrene monomers and the whole amount of rubbers, which make 100 wt.% in total, are introduced into a first reactor and subjected to initial polymerization, a step wherein a polymerized liquid obtained in the first reactor and the next batch of styrenic monomers are introduced into a second reactor and polymerized under stirring until a rubber phase inversion occurs to yield a rubbery polymer as dispersed particles, and a step wherein a polymerized liquid obtained in the second reactor and the last batch of styrenic monomers are continuously introduced into a third reactor to increase the polymerization conversion rate.

(Congo Red), and a water-soluble polyaldehyde compd. (glutaraldehyde) to a water-base polymer emulsion contg. a hydroxylated polymer. The hydroxylated polymer may be polymer particles or a protective colloid of the emulsion or may be a water-soluble polymer added to the emulsion. The amt. of the polyfunctional compd. added is about 0.001-50 wt. % of the hydroxylated polymer.
