    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a starch maleate which is swellable, is biologically degradable, and has a swellability resistant to aging by reacting a swellable starch maleate with at least one mono- and/or polyfunctional nucleophilic compd. by Michael addition reaction. SOLUTION: A starch maleate used is a starch ester having a degree of substitution (the number of substituents per glucose ring) of 0.2-2.0. The use of the starch maleate based on a cold-water-soluble starch is esp. advantageous. An example of the nucleophilic compd. is the one represented by the formula: H-X-R (where X is S or NH; and R is a 1-18C alkyl or a 6-12C aryl), and its salt (e.g. Na2 S) can be advantageously used also. The use of a combination of 0.001-0.5 equivalent of mercaptoethoxyethane with 0.5-0.999 equivalent of mercaptoethanol is esp. advanageous. The reaction is conducted in one-pot at room temp. to 80 deg.C for 10min to 10hr.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject plastisol having excellent storage stability and low viscosity, capable of forming a film excellent in mechanical and optical properties and useful for flooring materials, floor layers or the like by compounding a specific (meth) acrylate polymer with a softener and an inorganic filler. SOLUTION: This plastisol is prepared by compounding (A) 100 pts.wt. of a (meth)acrylate (co)polymer having a weight average molecular weight more than 2,000,000 g/mol with (B) 5-400 pts.wt. of a softener compatible with the component A and (C) 9-700 pts.wt. of an inorganic filler. The component A is obtained by subjecting a monomer mixture consisting of 20-100 wt.% of methyl methacrylate (M1 ), 0-80 wt.% of a compound (M2 ) of the formula [R1 is H or methyl; R2 is a (branched) 1-18C alkyl] other than the monomer M1 , 0-40 wt.% of a monomer (M3 ) other than the monomers M1 and M7 , and 0-40 wt.% of an adhesivity imparting monomer (M4 ), wherein the total of the monomers M1 to M4 is 100 wt.%, to polymerization such as emulsion polymerization.

    Abstract: Copolymers (CP) for the prodn. of cast glass or for moulding materials with high heat distortion temp. are obtd. by copolymerisation of (A) exo-methylene-lactone(s) of formula (I); with (B) unsatd. vinyl monomer(s) or different exo-methylene-lactones of formula (I). The claim does not include copolymers of alpha -methylene- gamma -butyrolactone with acrylonitrile, styrene, MMA or difunctional methacrylates, or copolymers of alpha -methylene- delta -valerolactone and styrene. Also claimed are (i) cast glass with low heat distortion, obtd. by bulk polymerisation of a syrup contg. (A) and (B) in an oven-type furnace; and (ii) mouldings with a high heat distortion pt., contg. copolymers (CP). In (I), n = 0 or 1; m = 0 or 1; n+m = 1 or 2; X and X are each =CH-R or two single-bonded gps. R and R ; one of the X gps. must be =CH-R and, if X is =CH-R , the sum of n+m must be 1; and R -R are each H, halogen or 1-7C alkyl (linear or branched, opt. contg. N, P or S hetero atoms and opt. substd. with alkoxy, halogen and/or carbonyl gps.), two of these R gps. may form a 5- or 6-membered ring.
