    Abstract: PURPOSE: To form a catalyst for purifying exhaust gases capable of selectively reducing nitrogen oxides by supporting specific amounts of oxides of Ti, Sn, Be or the like and oxides, sulfates or the like of Fe and V on a honeycomb carrier. CONSTITUTION: This catalyst for purifying exhaust gases is obtained by molding a honeycomb carrier consisting of about 2-70 wt.% of CeO2 and 0-20 wt.% of ZrO2 as well as optional iron oxides, alkaline earth metal oxides and/or aluminum oxide of the transition column containing rare earth metal oxides and then, supporting catalytic components of Pt and/or Pd, optionally Rh on the honeycomb carrier. The harmful substances such as nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, ammonia slip from denitrification and sulfur dioxide contained in the exhaust gases are purified by bringing the exhaust gases into contact with the catalyst mentioned above.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst having a high conversion rate for hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by using doped platinum, etc., as an active component in a monolithic catalyst element with throughflow passages of ceramic etc., coated with an activity-promoting dispersion coating. CONSTITUTION: A fine particulate metal oxide is surface-modified Al oxide, titanium oxide, silicon oxide, zeolite or a mixture thereof which is obtained by mixing the fine particulate metal oxide or the mixture thereof into an alcoholic soln. of a precursor for titanium oxide and/or silicon oxide with stirring, removing the alcoholic solvent with stirring continuously, drying the residual solid at a elevated temp., and after pulverization, calcining titanium dioxide or silicon dioxide at 300-600 deg.C for 0.5-4 hours while decomposing the precursor for titanium oxide and/or silicon oxide. Platinum, Pd, Rh and/or Ir doped with V is (are), included as (an) active component(s) on the carrier.
