Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst having a high conversion rate for hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by using doped platinum, etc., as an active component in a monolithic catalyst element with throughflow passages of ceramic etc., coated with an activity-promoting dispersion coating. CONSTITUTION: A fine particulate metal oxide is surface-modified Al oxide, titanium oxide, silicon oxide, zeolite or a mixture thereof which is obtained by mixing the fine particulate metal oxide or the mixture thereof into an alcoholic soln. of a precursor for titanium oxide and/or silicon oxide with stirring, removing the alcoholic solvent with stirring continuously, drying the residual solid at a elevated temp., and after pulverization, calcining titanium dioxide or silicon dioxide at 300-600 deg.C for 0.5-4 hours while decomposing the precursor for titanium oxide and/or silicon oxide. Platinum, Pd, Rh and/or Ir doped with V is (are), included as (an) active component(s) on the carrier.

Abstract: The coated catalyst is made by impregnating powdered finely divided carrier material with a solution of catalyst precursor, making an aqueous dispersion of impregnated material, coating an inert support with the dispersion, drying and calcining. Production of the coated catalyst comprises: (a) impregnating powdered finely divided materials of large surface area with a solution of catalyst precursors by the method of pore volume impregnation so that the precursors are adsorbed on the material(s); (b) making an aqueous coating dispersion from the mixture; (c) coating an inert support with the dispersion; and (d) drying and calcining the coating.

The catalyst contains a zeolite mixture of several zeolites with different moduli and platinum group metals as well as further metal oxides from the group comprising aluminium silicate, aluminium oxide and titanium oxide, wherein the aluminium silicate has a ratio by weight of silicon dioxide to aluminium oxide of 0.005 to 1 and the platinum group metals are deposited on only the further metal oxides.

The reduced oxidation effect with respect to sulphur dioxide is achieved by the finely particulate metal oxides being surface-modified aluminium oxide, titanium oxide, silicon oxide, zeolite or mixtures thereof. The surface modification consists in the specific surface of the metal oxides being coated with a layer consisting of titanium dioxide or silicon dioxide and comprising from 1 to 5 monolayers.
