Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable regulation of operation employing a second λ-sensor when in case of rich exhaust gas, the sensor voltage of the second λ-sensor does not exceed a set voltage by a value widely exceeding a predetermined voltage difference, a method for operating an exhaust emission control device for a gasoline engine. SOLUTION: Operation is effected mainly in a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio and operation is performed in a rich air-fuel ratio during acceleration or a full load operation. In this case, the exhaust gas purifying device is provided with a three-dimensional catalyst and the first λ-sensor followed by the catalyst and the second λ-sensor proceeded by the catalyst. The air-fuel ratio is regulated by using a signal from the first λ-sensor and a signal from the second λ-sensor is used in monitoring (trim control) of the first λ-sensor and diagnosis of operation of the catalyst.

Abstract: The invention relates to a high performance catalyst containing a layer on a n inert carrier body comprising noble metals from the platinum group deposited on support materials. The catalyst is characterised in that, the layer comprises platinum deposited in a washcoat consisting of Al203 which is stabilized with lanthana (La2O3), ceria (CeO2), which is stabilized with zirconia (ZrO2) and praseodymium (Pr6O11). Abstract: The present invention provides a powdered catalyst material based on aluminium oxide, which contains at least one basic metal oxide and at least one noble metal from the platinum group of the Periodic System of Elements in addition to aluminium oxide. The catalyst material is obtainable by loading a support material already stabilised by basic oxides by renewed impregnation with further basic oxides. After drying and calcining this post-impregnated material at temperatures below 800.degree.C, the catalytically active noble metals are also incorporated into the support material by impregnation.

The catalyst contains, in addition to finely divided, stabilised aluminium oxide, at least one finely divided cerium/zirconium mixed oxide and optionally finely divided nickel oxide, as well as highly dispersed amounts of cerium oxide, zirconium oxide and barium oxide. The palladium is distributed largely uniformly throughout the entire catalyst.

Nitrogen oxide-storage material comprises at least a storage component for nitrogen oxide in the form of particles of oxide(s), carbonate(s), or hydroxide(s) of earth metals magnesium calcium, strontium and barium as well as alkali metals potassium and caesium on a carrier material.
