    Abstract: A catalyst for catalytic combustion contains at least one precious metal from the platinum group on a finely divided carrier material. Its surface concentration as determined by X-photoelectron spectrometry is between 0.2 and 0.5 area %. Also claimed is the use of such a catalyst as an active coating on an inert carrier. Preferably the precious metal is Pt, Pd or Rh. The carrier material is chosen from the group Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2, ZrO2, hexa-aluminate and spinels which may be stabilised with Si, Zr, La, Ba or Y. The precious metal may be pre-mixed with a carrier material free of precious metal before being coated onto an inert carrier. This carrier may be a honeycomb or open pore foamed inorganic material.
