Abstract: A motorized vehicle capable of fault detection and of operation after a fault has been detected. The vehicle has a plurality of control components coupled to a motorized drive and a comparator for comparing the output of each of the control components with outputs of other control components so that failures may be identified. The vehicle may have multiple processors coupled to a plurality of control channels by means of a bus and a decision arrangement that suppresses the output of any processor for which a failure has been identified.

Abstract: An air elimination system is provided for an intravenous fluid delivery system for intravenous injection of fluid into a patient. An air-detection apparatus 5 is disposed in an intravenous fluid line 3. At the top end of the line 3 is attached a chamber 1, 2, 12 where air may be separated from the fluid. The separation chamber may be a drip chamber 12, a metering chamber 2 or the intravenous supply 1. When air is detected, a valve 11 or valves 7, 9 are switched, so that the intravenous fluid is prevented from flowing to the patient, and so that, when a pump 4 is turned on, the fluid is pumped to the separation chamber 1, 2, 12. In a preferred embodiment, the volume of pump's fluid capacity is greater than the volume of the fluid capacity of the intravenous line 31 between the pump 4 and the separation chamber 1, 2, 12, so that the pump can force air back up the intravenous line all the way to the separation chamber.

Abstract: An arrangement for improving the detection of drops in a drip chamber has a mirror element configured to focus light from a source to a detector in such a manner that a falling drop occludes a significant portion of the light reflected to the detector. In a preferred embodiment the mirror is located slightly below the drop forming orifice of the drip chamber and is shaped like an arcuate band of a curved surface. In a further preferred embodiment, a rotary motor with an eccentric weight is briefly energized to vibrationally clear any accumulation of droplets from the chamber wall. Other embodiments utilize a plurality of mirror elements to define an optical path from the source to detector which traverses the region throught which a drop falls 3 or more times.

Abstract: A system and method is provided for detecting the presence of drops in a fluid drop path, such as that in a medical infusion system, and for discriminating between signals resulting from true drops and signals resulting from aberrant fluid flow. A transducer generates a drop signal related to the presence of a drop in a fluid drop path. Also generated is a reference quantity related to the value of the drop signal in the absence of a drop. The deviation of the drop signal from the reference quantity is calculated, and is compared with first and second threshold values. The results of these two comparisons are then used to determined the presence or absence of a true drop.

Abstract: There is provided, in a preferred embodiment, a transportation vehicle for transporting an individual over ground having a surface that may be irregular. This embodiment has a support for supporting the subject. A. ground-contacting module, movably attached to the support, serves to suspend the subject in the support over the surface. The orientation of the ground-contacting module defines fore-aft and lateral planes intersecting one another at a vertical. The support and the ground-contacting module are components of an assembly. A motorized drive, mounted to the assembly and coupled to the ground-contacting module, causes locomotion of the assembly and the subject therewith over the surface. Finally, the embodiment has a control loop, in which the motorized drive is included, for dynamically enhancing stability in the fore-aft plane by operation of the motorized drive in connection with the ground-contacting module. Included in the control loop is a directional control, letting the vehicle move, lean and turn in response to an indication of the subject, e.g. that of leaning the vehicle. The ground contacting module may be realized as a pair of ground-contacting members, laterally disposed with respect to one another. The ground-contacting members may be wheels, a duster of wheels, or includes rotatably mounted arcuate element pairs.
