    Abstract: Continuous recovery of raw materials from coated films and apparatus for this purpose and film material recovered therewith. Large amounts of coated films can be fed to a continuous recycling process in which any pigments present in the coating and the substrate material are recovered. The treatment is carried out at room temperature in an alkaline medium consisting of soft soap, organic solvent and/or water, with or without the use of a catalyst. The solvent is recycled. After the first treatment stage, the film shreds can be treated in a second stage with a solvent/water mixture similarly to the first stage, and thorough final washing in a water or solvent circulation is effected in a third stage. The recovered film shreds are dried, pressed, milled and brought to the desired shape in a plastics agglomerator, and the recovered pigments are dried under reduced pressure (FIG. 1). The process and apparatus can be used with advantage for any type of substrate or printed media, for example for magnetic substrates, photographic substrates, printing plates, pigment-free substrates.

    Abstract: Production of moulded products, especially film includes the following stage (I): compounding and melt-extrusion of a mixture (I) containing 1-100 wt% of a mixture (II) comprising (a) 1-95 wt% pigment(s) (III) with a primary particle size of 5 nm to 20 microns, selected from an electrochemically inert solid (IIIa), a compound (IIIb) which is able to release lithium ions on charging, a compound (IIIc) which is able to take up Li ions on charging, and a mixture of (IIIa) with (IIIb) or (IIIc), (b) 5-99 wt% copolymer(s) (IV) of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and hexafluoropropylene (HFP) with an HFP content of 8-25 wt% and (c) 1-200 wt% (based on a + b) of a plasticiser (V) selected from dibutyl, dimethyl or diethyl phthalate, tris-(butoxyethyl) phosphate, propylene or ethylene carbonate, trimethyl trimellitate, or a mixture of two or more of these. Also claimed are: (i) a process for the production of composite products comprising (I) forming first layer(s) by compounding and melt-extruding mixture (I) as above, (II) forming second layer(s) by compounding a mixture (I) containing a mixture (II) which contains a solid (IIIa) but not (IIIb) or (IIIc), and then (III) combining these layers by a conventional coating process; (ii) moulded products, especially film, obtained by process stage I; (iii) composite products obtained by the complete process as in (i); (iv) separators, solid electrolytes, electrodes, sensors, electrochromic windows, displays, condensers or ion-conducting film containing moulded products or composites as above; and (v) electrochemical cells containing a separator, solid electrolyte or electrode as in (iv), or a combination of two or more of these.

    Abstract: A magnetic recording material contains a layer comprising a magnetic pigment and a polyurethane binder (I) prepared by reacting an isocyanate (II) with a chain extender (V).(II) are (a) prepolymers prepared by reacting (A1) a polyvalent alcohol (III) containing more than one hydroxyl group per molecule capable of reacting with (II), with (A2) an aromatic or aliphatic polyvalent isocyanate (IV), or (b) compounds (IV). The ratio of reactive hydroxyl groups in (III) to the isocyanate groups in (IV) is less than 1. (V) are prepared by reacting (a) a polyvalent alcohol (VI) with either (b1) a compound (VII) containing an epoxy group and an additional functional group which is reactive with alcohols, forming a compound (VIII) which is reacted with an alpha,beta-olefinic unsaturated carboxylic acid (IX) to form a compound (X), or (b2) a compound (IX) to form a compound (X), and then (c) reacting (X) with an amine (XI) containing at least one prim. amino group which can react with olefinic bond in (IX). The sum of reactive amino and hydroxyl groups in (V) is greater than the number of isocyanate groups in (II).
