    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical surface smoothing tool. SOLUTION: An optical surface smoothing tool 10 has an entirely annular working member 12 in which a rigid support element 11 or at least a part thereof can axially deform. The support element 11 constitutes a concave annular housing 15. The working member 12 is fitted to the support element 11 through a bottom 16 of the annular housing 15 and protrudes out of the support element 11. Smoothing of a spectacle lens is one of application of the tool, and such a lens can be made of either inorganic or organic material.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an optical surface-finishing tool. The inventive tool consists of: a rigid support (4) comprising a transverse end surface (13); an elastically-compressible interface (5) which is applied against the end surface (13) such as to cover same; and a flexible buffer (6) which can be applied against the optical surface (2), which is applied against the interface (5) and which covers said interface at least partially, opposite and in line with the aforementioned end surface (13). According to the invention, the buffer comprises a central part (6a) which is in line with the end surface (13) and a peripheral part (14) which extends transversely beyond said end surface (13). The invention is also equipped with elastic return means (15) comprising a collar (18) which is used to connect the peripheral part (14) to the support (4). Moreover, said collar (18) comprises a continuous peripheral part (22) which rests on the peripheral part (14) of the buffer (6) such as to co-operate with same.

    Abstract: Two stage manufacturing process for prescribed ophthalmic lenses comprises a first cutting tool trajectory followed by a milling tool whose trajectories are controlled by a numerical control unit. Manufacturing process of a prescribed ophthalmic lens surface, comprising the following stages: (a) machining of the surface by moving a cutting tool in a continuous surface envelope trajectory, to form furrows, where two adjacent furrows are consistently 0,01 and 3 mm apart, in order to obtain a surface with mean arithmetic roughness Ra = 0.1 to 0.7 mu m; and (b) smoothing the machined surface using a smoothing tool in a continuous surface envelope trajectory to produce two adjacent streams 0.2 to 3 mm apart, in order to filter the surface envelope undulation between a low frequency corresponding to the envelope and a high frequency corresponding to a basic roughness. This provides a smoothed surface having a mean arithmetic roughness Ra lower than 0,1 mu m. Independent claims are also included for: (i) a digitally controlled machine (Figure 6) comprising a lens support (40) capable of translation and rotation on a vertical axis and a milling tool (10) capable of translation on a horizontal axis, inclinable with reference to a vertical axis and able to rotate on a vertical axis, the translatory (Z) and rotation (R1)) movement of the support (40 )and the translation movements (X) and tilt (B) of the tool being controlled simultaneously by the numerical control unit, the rotation(R2) of the milling tool is also controlled by the control unit; (ii) equipment to provide the surface finish comprising (see Fig 9) a support 1001 in which the lens can be place and rotated and an arm (1003) carrying a nozzle (1002) which provides resin at a low pressure and can be moved vertically and horizontally with respect to the support (1001).
