    Abstract: Two stage manufacturing process for prescribed ophthalmic lenses comprises a first cutting tool trajectory followed by a milling tool whose trajectories are controlled by a numerical control unit. Manufacturing process of a prescribed ophthalmic lens surface, comprising the following stages: (a) machining of the surface by moving a cutting tool in a continuous surface envelope trajectory, to form furrows, where two adjacent furrows are consistently 0,01 and 3 mm apart, in order to obtain a surface with mean arithmetic roughness Ra = 0.1 to 0.7 mu m; and (b) smoothing the machined surface using a smoothing tool in a continuous surface envelope trajectory to produce two adjacent streams 0.2 to 3 mm apart, in order to filter the surface envelope undulation between a low frequency corresponding to the envelope and a high frequency corresponding to a basic roughness. This provides a smoothed surface having a mean arithmetic roughness Ra lower than 0,1 mu m. Independent claims are also included for: (i) a digitally controlled machine (Figure 6) comprising a lens support (40) capable of translation and rotation on a vertical axis and a milling tool (10) capable of translation on a horizontal axis, inclinable with reference to a vertical axis and able to rotate on a vertical axis, the translatory (Z) and rotation (R1)) movement of the support (40 )and the translation movements (X) and tilt (B) of the tool being controlled simultaneously by the numerical control unit, the rotation(R2) of the milling tool is also controlled by the control unit; (ii) equipment to provide the surface finish comprising (see Fig 9) a support 1001 in which the lens can be place and rotated and an arm (1003) carrying a nozzle (1002) which provides resin at a low pressure and can be moved vertically and horizontally with respect to the support (1001).
